Traditional plastic recycling relies solely on material type sorting (e.g., PE, PP). However, when plastics of the same material but different aging levels are mixed, the performance of the recycled product drops sharply. Near‑infrared spectroscopy combined with machine learning models can identify spectral differences of polypropylene across 7 distinct aging stages. After 40 days of accelerated aging, the elongation at break of PP drops to about one‑sixth of its original value. The system uses second‑derivative preprocessing plus a linear SVC algorithm, achieving 99% classification accuracy for aging stages. This technology enables recyclers to implement ā€œquality‑based grading,ā€ significantly increasing the added value of recycled plastics.

High-resolution NIR spectroscopy combined with wavelet packet transform can resolve subtle spectral changes of metabolites such as proteins and lactate in the extracellular fluid.
