FT-NIR vs. Conventional NIR: Not Replacement, but Choice
Which is better, FT-NIR or conventional grating-type NIR? The answer depends on your scenario.
š¬ FT-NIR: Uses an interferometer to acquire all wavelengths simultaneously, offering high resolution and excellent wavelength accuracyāideal for fine laboratory analysis. However, it is sensitive to vibration and may require damping platforms in industrial environments.
āļø Conventional Grating Type: Scans wavelengths sequentially, has no moving parts, is vibrationāresistant and temperatureātolerant, available in both benchtop and portable forms, making it more suitable for industrial online and field rapid testing. Fixedāgrating types also demonstrate excellent SNR performance in the NIR region in actual measurements.
š Data from USDA research shows that in routine measurements such as wheat protein and moisture, the accuracy of both technologies is essentially comparable. Under certain conditions, conventional NIR can even achieve higher SNRāthanks to its more localized noise distribution and higher beam power density.
