A multi-disciplinary delegation from Meinhardt Group had the privilege of visiting the new Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) Punggol Campus on 28 July for an inspiring and comprehensive three-hour tour – an experience that left us energised about the future of engineering, research, and strategic collaboration.
Warmly hosted by Assoc. Prof. Chew Beng Soh, Deputy Cluster Director, Engineering; Robin Ngan, Director, SITLEARN & NACE, and Karen Teo, Client & Partnership Development, SITLEARN, our visit exemplified the spirit of academia-industry exchange.
The itinerary began with a welcome and overview at Block E6 before proceeding to a series of cutting-edge lab tours:
Fire Safety Lab – Guided by Assoc. Prof. Hui An, we observed advanced testing platforms for fire behaviour and protection technologies.
HVAC Lab – Led by Michael Nielsen, this lab showcased the latest innovations in indoor environmental systems and energy efficiency.
iBMS Control Room – Demonstrated how SIT monitors and manages campus systems in real-time, integrating smart building technology.
Construction Lab – With Assoc. Prof. Mingshan Zhao, we explored hands-on facilities for civil and structural engineering training.
In addition, Meinhardt was granted special access to two cornerstone sustainability facilities:
Sustainable Building Lab – Featuring experimental setups for green construction methods, passive design solutions and smart energy use.
District Cooling Plant – A model of large-scale energy optimisation, offering invaluable insights into urban cooling infrastructure and district-level sustainability.
The tour was interspersed with a networking coffee session which sparked lively conversations on emerging technologies such as AI, talent development, and practical R&D.
We concluded with a debrief on potential partnership opportunities where we explored collaborative R&D platforms; joint industry-academic advisory boards, and CET & Executive Development programmes.
“Our visit to SIT was more than a tour — it was a strategic dialogue between two forward-thinking institutions. The depth of innovation we witnessed affirms SIT’s position as a vital partner in shaping the future of the built environment. We look forward to co-developing meaningful R&D, talent development, and digital transformation initiatives that will not only benefit our organisations, academia and students but also advance the sustainability, resilience and intelligence of urban infrastructure across the region,” Johnson Paul, Director, Business Development, Meinhardt Group.
Our sincere appreciation goes out to Karen, Robin, and Prof. Soh, along with all the SIT faculty and officers who made this visit so engaging and enriching.
Special thanks also to the Meinhardt representatives who participated and brought valuable perspectives to the dialogue.
