URECA was honoured to participate in the Powering Social Impact: Digital Frontiers for Social Good Forum hosted by UNSW Business School’s Digital Frontiers Lab, in partnership with UNDP Mongolia and URECA.

The forum brought together researchers, policymakers, development partners, industry leaders, and community-focused practitioners to explore an important question: how can technology support a more just and inclusive energy transition?

For URECA, this was a meaningful opportunity to share the story behind our Coal-to-Solar initiative in Mongolia. Through keynote presentations, video stories, and a VR experience, we were able to bring the realities of ger district households into the room, including the challenges families face when relying on coal for heat during Mongolia’s harsh winters, and what becomes possible when cleaner, solar-powered heating solutions are introduced.

Our work is not only about replacing one energy source with another. It is about combining renewable energy, digital monitoring, carbon finance, and community engagement to create solutions that are practical, measurable, and scalable.

We are grateful to UNSW Business School, the Digital Frontiers Lab, and UNDP in Mongolia - НҮБ-ын Хөгжлийн хөтөлбөр for creating a space where research, policy, implementation, and lived experience could come together in a grounded and constructive way.

Thank you to the organisers, speakers, partners, and participants who contributed to such an important discussion on technology, social impact, and a just energy transition.

The energy transition must be shaped not only by technology, but by a deeper understanding of the people and communities it is intended to serve.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Every day is Earth Day. Under this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” we recognize that a sustainable future is the result of collective action and the consistent efforts we make every single day.

From large-scale solutions to the small daily habits, every action counts toward a bright future with clean air and a thriving environment. Let’s continue to protect, restore, and invest in the only home we’ve got. 🌿

Nature Magazine recently published a photo story on air pollution in Ulaanbaatar featuring URECA’s Coal-to-Solar project.

For us, this is truly meaningful because the story reflects the challenge as it really is. Ulaanbaatar’s air pollution is not just an environmental issue. It is tied to how families heat their homes, how cities grow, how climate displacement reshapes communities, and how difficult it can be to make cleaner alternatives accessible and trusted at the household level. The article brings those dimensions together through people, place, and lived experience.

It also highlights what gives us hope. Coal-to-Solar reflects our belief that low-income households should not be left behind in the energy transition, and that practical systems combining solar, electric heating, batteries, smart monitoring, and insulation can help make that possible.

We are grateful to see this work and the urgency behind it brought to a wider global audience, and we remain focused on building what comes next.

URECA is now in year four.

Mongolia is on the frontline of global grassland degradation, with nearly 77% of its territory affected. Overgrazing and climate change are driving a cycle of vegetation loss, soil degradation, and declining carbon storage.

In 2022, we started by understanding the system before attempting to scale solutions.

Our pilot in Zavkhan Province, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, combined plant surveys, soil analysis, and drone-based monitoring across 4 sites and 9 sample points. The findings were clear. Removing grazing pressure led to vegetation recovery, improved soil conditions, and increased carbon storage potential.

We then worked directly with herders, the real experts of the grassland. Together with partners including Good Growth, we began a multi-year field campaign in Jinst soum, Bayankhongor Province, building long-term monitoring partnerships with two herder communities, Ovoot Tsagaan and Erdenet Mal Sureg. The focus was simple. Turn community knowledge into measurable data and practical tools for livestock management.

Building on this foundation, we are developing a system to measure and verify change from soil to landscape scale using field data, remote sensing, and monitoring technologies.

According to the Asian Development Bank, Mongolia’s grasslands hold over 440 million tCO₂e of carbon sequestration potential over 20 years, driven by improved grazing and livestock management and soil carbon recovery. Our ambition is to help enable that potential.

Today, the world comes together for Earth Hour 2026. On Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 PM local time, millions of people across the globe will switch off their non-essential lights for one hour in support of the planet.

This year is extra special as Earth Hour celebrates 20 years of impact. Since it began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour has grown into a global movement that reminds us that small actions, when taken together, can create meaningful change.

Let this be more than just one hour in the dark. Let it be a moment to reconnect with nature, spend time with family and friends, and reflect on how we can live more sustainably every day. Switch off your lights and give an hour for Earth.

When we started Coal-to-Solar, the goal was simple: help families stop burning coal in the coldest capital in the world.

Today, we are grateful to see the initiative featured by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with support from the European Union and the EBRD Star Venture programme.

Coal-to-Solar supports households in Ulaanbaatar’s ger districts to transition from coal to electric heating powered by distributed renewable energy. Through digital monitoring and transparent measurement of emissions reductions, the project connects local air quality improvements with global climate finance.

This recognition reflects the work of many partners and families who were willing to try something new. Scaling this responsibly remains the focus.

Clean energy holds the power to decarbonize the power sector, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Directly addressing the root cause of climate change, clean energy is one of the most significant tools in our journey towards a sustainable future.

In 2025, the transition to clean energy reached a historical milestone. For the first time in record, renewables generated more electricity than coal. Globally, solar and wind expansion continued at unprecedented rates, with their combined growth exceeding all new electricity demand during the first three quarters of the year.

The power of clean energy is clearer than ever. The transition we make now will define the climate we live with tomorrow.

🎉 Great news to start the new year 🎉

We are excited to share that URECA’s Coal to Solar Project has officially received Gold Standard Design Certification.

This milestone shows how digital MRV can make emissions reductions measurable, verifiable, and attributable at the household level. Through this first of its kind approach, household scale reductions are translated into Gold Standard certified, high quality, high integrity carbon credits.

How does it work?

✅ Digital MRV in every household
✅ AI, IoT sensors, and renewable energy systems working together
✅ Blockchain based architecture for transparency and traceability
✅ Emissions reductions tracked to the minute for each household

This marks one of the first instances globally where digital MRV operates at the household level, enabling families to independently generate verified emissions reductions. Households are no longer just beneficiaries of clean energy. They become active participants in carbon markets, turning their transition from coal to clean energy into certified climate impact.

This level of precision and transparency is designed to open the carbon market to those who have historically been excluded, especially families in low income or hard to reach areas. This certification provides a clear pathway for grassroots households to undertake carbon projects that are digitally verified, without traditional barriers of scale, geography, or income.

Most importantly, this progress is driven by the households themselves, who are leading the transition away from coal and showing that climate action can start at home.

We are grateful to all our partners for their contributions, with a special thank you to UNDP in Mongolia - НҮБ-ын Хөгжлийн хөтөлбөр, The Asia Foundation, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Asian Development Bank, and GerHub for their continued support for this work.

A big thank you as well to our team for building and operating the systems that make this possible.

This is just the beginning. Now we scale.
