⚓ Congratulations to SMEEU on 45 Years! 🎉
ASMI was delighted to join our longstanding partner, the SMEEU, in celebrating its 45th Anniversary today; and to witness the unveiling of its new logo as the Union begins another chapter in its journey.
The occasion is especially meaningful following SMEEU’s recent name change from the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Employees’ Union to the Singapore Marine and Offshore Engineering Employees’ Union; a change that reflects how our industry itself has evolved beyond traditional shipbuilding and ship repair into the wider marine and offshore energy sector.
🤝 Reaffirming our partnership
We were also pleased to mark the occasion with the signing of an MOU between ASMI, SMEEU and Employment & Employability Institute, e2i, reaffirming our commitment to continue working together for our industry and, importantly, its people.
This builds on the strong partnership we have developed over the years; including our annual Marine Week, the Marine & Offshore Youth Forum, workforce development efforts and other initiatives to strengthen skills, careers and opportunities across the sector.
One message from today’s celebration particularly resonated: while industries and jobs will continue to change, we must continue to protect and invest in our workers, ensuring they have the skills and opportunities to move into the good jobs of tomorrow.
Singapore’s approach to labour-management relations has always been distinctive. Our tripartite model is built not on confrontation between employers and workers, but on cooperation, trust and a shared interest in helping companies remain competitive while ensuring workers progress alongside them.
As our sector transforms through decarbonisation, offshore renewables, digitalisation, AI and new technologies, this partnership becomes even more important. Companies must be able to transform and compete globally, while our workforce must have the opportunity to acquire new skills, take on better jobs and share in that progress.
It was therefore also heartening to catch up with many ASMI member companies at the celebration today and to see more companies recognising the value of being part of Singapore’s wider union and Labour Movement family.
Our industry has weathered many cycles over the decades because companies, workers, unions and Government have repeatedly found ways to move forward together. That spirit of partnership will be just as important as Singapore’s marine and offshore energy sector builds the capabilities, solutions and talent needed for the next phase of the global maritime and energy transition. 🌏⚓🌱
Congratulations once again to SMEEU, its leaders, staff and members on 45 years of service to our workers and industry. Thank you for having ASMI with you for this important milestone, and we look forward to many more years of partnership ahead.
