The battery is the heart of an electric forklift, representing one of the most significant investments in the machine's lifecycle. Implementing correct maintenance protocols can substantially extend battery life, maintain peak capacity, and ensure a safe working environment.
Here are the four essential steps for proactive battery care:
1. Strategic Charging Practices: Avoid short "opportunity charging" on lead-acid batteries unless they are specifically designed for it, as this prematurely exhausts the battery’s fixed number of lifecycle charges. Always allow the battery to charge fully, and avoid deep discharging below 20% capacity.
2. Correct Water Level Management: Inspect electrolyte levels regularly. To prevent acid boil-over, any topping up with deionized or distilled water must always be done after the charging cycle is complete (unless the plates are fully exposed before charging). Utilizing a centralized single-point watering system ensures even and safe distribution.
3. Maintain Cleanliness and Dryness: Accumulations of dirt, oxidation, and spilled acid on top of the battery can create tracking currents. This causes slow self-discharge and accelerated corrosion. Wipe down surfaces regularly to maintain proper electrical insulation.
4. Thermal Control and Ventilation: Ensure that designated charging areas are well-ventilated, as charging lead-acid batteries generates hydrogen gas. Additionally, monitor operational temperatures; excessive heat during charging dramatically shortens the chemical lifespan of the cells.
