What is a Hammar H20 HRU?

An HRU — Hydrostatic Release Unit — is a vital safety device that automatically releases liferafts or emergency beacons if a vessel sinks.

Last week, we looked at how the Hammar H20 ERU – Electronic Release Unit supports a controlled release process for marine evacuation equipment.

But the release unit is only one part of a larger safety system.

With Hammar Remote Release Systems, life-saving appliances can be activated from a safer and more strategic location onboard — such as the bridge, a muster station or another designated control point.

This means the crew does not always need to access exposed release positions during an emergency. Instead, the release sequence can be initiated remotely, helping reduce manual handling and enabling a faster, more controlled response in challenging conditions.

The system can be designed to activate one or several release units, depending on the vessel’s layout and safety requirements. It can also be integrated with sensors or control functions to support different evacuation scenarios.

How does an Electronic Release Unit work — and why does it matter at sea?

In an emergency evacuation, speed, control and crew safety are critical.

This animation shows how the Hammar H20 ERU – Electronic Release Unit supports a controlled release process for marine evacuation equipment.

Instead of requiring crew members to manually operate release points in exposed and potentially dangerous conditions, the system can be activated electronically from a safer position. Once activated, the signal is sent to the release unit, triggering the release mechanism and allowing the equipment to deploy as intended.
