Gränsfors Bruk - We have been manufacturing axes since 1902

Over more than 100 years, Gränsfors Bruks AB has built up a business based around handcrafted axes and axe expertise, with a focus on quality and environmental responsibility. Today, 30 people work here in production and sales. 80 percent of the production is exported to 30 countries. When it comes to the quality and feel of the axes, much depends on the experience and skill of the individual craftsman. Each axe is signed with the smith’s initials as a guarantee of quality. The company is located in the Swedish village of Gränsfors in northern Hälsingland, around 10 km west of the E4 motorway, between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall. The forge sits at the heart of the village and you can hear the rhythmic pounding as you approach. You are more than welcome to visit us and see our axes being forged, sharpened, tempered and fitted with handles. In addition to the forge and a factory shop, there is also an axe museum and during the summer a restaurant, café and craft courses in subjects such as forging and log-building.

Which is hotter, lava or a piece of steel about to become an axe? 🌋

Closer than you might think! That’s Martin Forslund (MF) you’re watching, heating the steel to 1,200°C using induction. Lava can reach about the same temperature. Just another day at work for us.

A fun fact about our Small Hatchet for those of you who like to fish 🎣 The back of the axe head is slightly rounded, so you can use it as a fish priest to dispatch your catch.

Axe smith Lennart Pettersson (LP) had fishing in mind when he designed it. Having spent time fishing himself, he wanted it to be useful for that too. And if you’re cooking your catch over a fire, you can easily make both feather sticks and kindling with the same axe.

Snart kommer vår skafttillverkning ännu närmare yxsmedjan i Gränsfors! Skaften till våra yxor har hittills tillverkats i södra Sverige, men får framöver sitt hem hos vårt systerbolag Svedbro Smide AB i Gnarp, där fabriken nu byggs ut för att ge plats åt träförädling.

Svedbro Smide tillverkar idag kofotar och trädfällriktaren Stalpen och delar vår övertygelse om att bra verktyg ska tillverkas med omsorg och hålla länge.
