When the evenings begin to grow darker, we still want to light the way home and let the sense of the house begin even before we step inside.

Our lanterns and stable lamps are inspired by originals from the late 1800s and early 1900s, made in cast iron and designed for entrances, porches, façades and gateposts. Different models for different places, depending on where the light is needed.

A few years ago, Moa and Filip took over his family home and the farm, where generations before them had lived and worked. Since then, they have been restoring the main house with a steady hand and a deep respect for its origins and the people who came before them.
The house sits at the heart of a working farm that today includes agriculture, padel courts, an ice cream café and even its own sunflower field. Room by room, the old house has gradually been brought back to life.

The bathroom is a good example of how old houses continue to evolve. When the house was first built, a room like this would not have existed in the way we think of a bathroom today. Modern comfort has changed how we live, but it does not have to feel disconnected from the house itself. Here, the aim has been to create a practical, comfortable room using materials, colours and details that sit naturally alongside the older parts of the house.

In that sense, restoring an old house is not about turning back the clock. It is about allowing the house to keep living, while making room for the way we live today.

In the past, you could often tell where a firewood basket belonged simply by looking at it.

At the turn of the 20th century, a basket made for the parlour was designed with the eye in mind. Brass, copper and wrought iron were shaped into decorative forms that became part of the room.
In the kitchen, everyday life placed different demands on the basket. Wood had to be carried in, loaded, emptied and carried again, often several times a day. Here, the basket needed to be lighter, stronger and easier to handle. Beauty still had its place, but function usually came first.

This one sits in a beautiful house in Roslagen that we had the pleasure of visiting thanks to where its form and material feel perfectly in keeping with the age and character of the house.

Stair railings from the turn of the century were often crafted with solid wooden handrails in oak, mahogany, or painted pine. They frequently featured decorative profiles and ended with a curved wooden detail at the foot of the stairs. In simpler stairwells and villas, the railings were usually made entirely of wood, with upright wooden balusters.

Renovating or replacing a stair railing is a rewarding project that can make a big difference without being too time consuming. With turned posts, handrails, and finials to choose from, there are many possibilities for creating a personal expression. Here, we share examples from our customers, featuring both inspiring original railings and designs recreated from historical originals.

Personal favourites from Karlavägen 7 ✨
Our experienced team shares some of their favourite details from the store.

Viktoria’s choice is a selection of our surface mounted porcelain switches.
Around 1900, electricity was often added to houses that had been built long before electric lighting became common. Switches were typically made from white or black porcelain, and sometimes brass, often mounted on small turned wooden bases. These were practical materials and details that have also aged beautifully.
If you are considering replacing your switches, Viktoria’s advice is to begin with how you want to use them. Do you simply need to turn the lights on and off, or would you also like to dim the lighting and create a softer atmosphere, perhaps in the living room?

Once you know which function you need, you can move on to the aesthetic choice and consider which design feels right for your home and its period.

At Karlavägen 7, you can see the different options up close, feel the materials and get personal guidance from our team. We are happy to help you, welcome!

Do you have a little extra time for those projects at home that have been waiting for some love?

Painting with linseed oil paint does not have to be difficult or complicated. Its ability to pe*****te deep into the wood fibres creates a finish that both protects and preserves.
Our paints can be mixed in any shade. Simply bring your colour code or a paint sample to the store and we will mix the perfect colour for you. We also offer a selection of standard shades, carefully chosen with traditional colour schemes for woodwork, tiles and wallpaper in mind.

Follow our four step guide to achieve a beautiful and historically authentic finish with linseed oil paint. Read the full guide via the link in our bio.

As our Oslo store begins to take shape, a new chapter is beginning at Maridalsveien 87. In a part of the city shaped by the workshops and workers along Akerselva, we are preparing the rooms that will soon become Sekelskifte’s first home outside Sweden.

We are very happy to introduce Hanna, our new Store Manager, who together with her team will soon welcome you to our Oslo store.
After almost 20 years in Oslo, Hanna knows the city well and has a great affection for its older homes and buildings.

Hanna! What do you hope Sekelskifte can bring to Oslo?
A place for inspiration and knowledge, where our team can help customers find the right details and guide them through their projects with care for the character of their homes.

What feels most exciting about opening the store in Oslo?
To finally welcome people in, hear about their projects and offer a wide selection of woodwork, tiles, flooring and other details to see, feel and compare in person.

In mid September, Hanna and the Oslo team will open the doors at Maridalsveien 87. We look forward to welcoming you there!

Set in a Jugend apartment in Stockholm, this newly renovated kitchen draws inspiration from the building's original character. Simple craftsmanship, carefully considered details and a restrained material palette reflect the ideals of the early 20th century.

Natural materials such as wood in soft hues and light marble are paired with a porcelain sink and untreated brass hardware. Above the countertop, our Runeberg wall lamp provides both practical task lighting and a timeless detail. Classic brass k***s and pull handles complete the kitchen, together with our Victoria two-handle kitchen faucet in untreated brass.

During the 19th century, the beautifully set table became an increasingly important part of the home. White tablecloths, napkins and carefully chosen details were not only practical, but also a way of showing hospitality and care.

Our tablecloth weight is just such a detail. Made from untreated brass and based on an old curtain tassel from the late 19th century, it keeps the cloth in place on breezy summer evenings and adds a decorative touch to the table as we enjoy the last of the summer.
