Ask five architects what an EcoCocon building looks like, and you'll get five different answers. So we wrote an article about it.

The straw and timber wall does the same structural and thermal work on every project, quietly, consistently. What happens on the outside is where that consistency stops.

Timber cladding left to weather naturally. Render, soft and earthen. Brick that disappears into the street. Building with a bio-based material was never about designing within limits, it's about the architect having the final say on how the building looks, not the material underneath.

Every architect knows the distance between the sketch and what actually gets built. Somewhere in between, something usually gets negotiated away.

Often it starts with the structure. The span, the wall thickness, the opening that has to shrink.

This is a 436.40 m² home in Berango, País Vasco, designed by José Luis Barrón Fernández and Juan Ciudad Herrero on load-bearing EcoCocon straw walls and a lightweight glue-laminated timber frame. The sketches and the construction photos show the same project at two stages.

What sits on top of those straw walls: a ventilated ceramic facade, glass floors, and a triple-height atrium working as a passive solar chimney. The panels went up like any other prefabricated system, the external membrane applied as part of the build-up, and the wall took the finish the design called for.

This house started with a love of red rock and long hikes.

The owners kept coming back to the desert around Kanab, Utah, for the trails, the cliffs, and the nearby national parks. Eventually, they decided they wanted to spend more time there, so they built a place of their own — a vacation home in a climate that puts any building to the test, with dry heat by day and sharp temperature drops at night.

They built the house with the EcoCocon wall system trying to meet the Passive House standard, using climate data for that exact location. And it is in this demanding setting that the walls quietly do their work. The house was designed for an annual heating demand of 10 kWh/m² and a cooling demand of 7 kWh/m², both well under the Passive House threshold of 15 kWh/m². Straw walls with carefully minimised thermal bridging help keep indoor temperatures stable as the desert swings from hot to cold.

The owners put the house up for rent because they wanted more people to experience what a Passive House actually feels like. Not just read the numbers. Feel the difference: stable temperatures, quiet interiors, and a sense of ease in a place where maintaining comfortable conditions can require a lot of energy.

And this is where a desert house becomes relevant far beyond Utah. The conditions may be more extreme there, but the underlying challenge is increasingly familiar across Europe: keeping buildings comfortable as summer temperatures rise, without becoming ever more dependent on cooling.

The story does not stop with one desert retreat. Across Europe, the same wall system is already being used in buildings of different types and scales — acting as a buffer between everyday life and the increasingly demanding conditions outside.

Passive House has a reputation for being hard to hit. Most of that difficulty shows up on site: airtightness that leaks, junctions that bridge heat, details that look fine on paper and fail with a blower door.

A lot of that gets easier when the wall arrives with the hard parts already solved.

Say "straw construction" and most architects picture something rustic: exposed timber, natural textures, an eco-cabin look.

This private home in Berango, País Vasco looks nothing like that. A sculptural, monolithic form finished in ventilated ceramic, deep roof overhangs, and glass floors suspended above a courtyard cascade. Nothing about the exterior signals straw.

Here's how it's actually built: the structural core combines load-bearing straw walls with a lightweight glue-laminated timber frame, for a 436.40 m² house. Architects José Luis Barrón Fernández and Juan Ciudad Herrero used that structure to design a triple-height atrium with glass floors, bordered by a waterfall and a cistern that visually extends the pool into the interior. The atrium works as a passive solar chimney: it draws in cool air from contact with the water and releases warm air through motorised rooflights above every room. Because the atrium connects to every room, natural light also reaches the surrounding walls directly, cutting down on artificial lighting. Two heat recovery units, two air-source heat pumps, and a photovoltaic roof tile system with its own battery room complete the passive design, all built to work quietly in the background.

That's the case for EcoCocon on projects like this: the system carries the structural and thermal load, so the design brief never has to bend around the material. Straw becomes the part of the building nobody has to think about, freeing the architect to design exactly what they envisioned.

Social housing needs to scale fast. Sustainable construction is often seen as the opposite: slower, harder to standardize, harder to control on quality and timeline.
Rustenburgstraat in Eindhoven shows that doesn't have to be the tradeoff. 🏗️
44 outdated homes are being replaced by 89 new social housing units for developer Trudo. The entire wall system was pre-assembled in a controlled hall environment and delivered to site ready for installation, with the EcoCocon Straw Wall System integrated throughout.
What stood out on this project:

-Every phase visible and verifiable, from the first pre-assembled element to the finished building
-No weather-dependent delays
-Consistent quality across all 89 units
-A sequence that ran predictably from start to finish

But the part that matters most sits beyond Eindhoven. 🌍
Every housing authority in Europe is facing the same equation: build faster, build greener, and don't let one goal cancel out the other. A pre-assembly hall, the EcoCocon Straw Wall System, and a repeatable process don't depend on the Netherlands, this contractor, or this climate. They depend on discipline in the process, and that travels.
That's the difference between a good project and a model. Rustenburgstraat is the second one. It's a blueprint for how social housing developers anywhere on the continent can hit density targets and carbon targets in the same build, without treating them as competing priorities.

Danish municipalities procuring public buildings today are working against three requirements at once: a fixed budget, a fixed timeline, and increasingly explicit sustainability and carbon criteria written into the tender itself. Bio-based construction is often assumed to trade one of these off against the other two.

Rønde Børnehus, a kindergarten built with the EcoCocon Straw Wall system, is answering that on-site. The walls went up, the roof was installed, floors were cast, and windows closed the building within the same standard municipal budget and timeline a conventional build would require, while meeting the carbon and bio-based material criteria the project was tendered on.

This is the pattern EcoCocon is built around: prefabricated panels manufactured off-site, assembled fast, closing the building envelope early and giving contractors a predictable path to weathertightness, all with a wall system that stores carbon rather than emitting it. For public clients, being able to satisfy sustainability requirements without absorbing cost or schedule risk is what makes a bio-based system procurable at scale, not just permissible.

Rooftop extensions are one of the most effective ways to add housing in dense cities. The obstacle is always the same: what the existing structure can carry, and how fast you can build on top of it.

Steel and concrete make both harder. Heavy loads, long crane schedules, weeks on site. There is another way.

In the centre of Nice, an existing 3-storey residential building had its roof removed and two new floors added on top. Four duplex social housing apartments for Groupe Crequy, built upward in a city where there is no land left to build outward.

Two requirements drove the choice of system. First: no possibility to keep a crane on site for several days. Second: the top floors of a building in the south of France, where overheating is a real and measurable risk.

EcoCocon answered both. Panels arrive from the factory with straw already pressed into the timber frame, custom-made to dimension, ready to position without preparation on site. One truck, the road closed for three hours overnight, the walls up in four days. The system fits the crane window, not the other way around.

On the upper floors, the straw delivers the thermal lag the location demands. Lime plaster outside, clay inside. The apartments stay cool in summer without mechanical compensation. That was the requirement. The system met it.

The structural logic follows the same principle. EcoCocon panels are light. On a vertical extension, the existing building sets hard limits on additional load. Timber keeps those loads low, which is what makes the duplex layouts and ceiling heights possible without heavy reinforcement of the existing structure.

People do not usually choose an apartment because of what the walls are made of. At ETC Hyllie, they did.

Around 2,000 people saved their money into this building because they wanted to see it finished. Some moved cities for it. Many had been backing the project for years before it existed. Once they moved in, the feedback was almost unanimous, and almost always about the same thing: the air feels different. Fresh, never stuffy, never dry. Visitors notice within minutes.

For developers, this is the part worth paying attention to. Bio-based is usually framed as a cost or a compliance question. Hyllie shows it as something else: a reason people actively seek a building out, pay into it early, and stay.

Building something the market has never seen before means building without a roadmap. No precedent for lenders. No template for insurers. No comparable project to point to. 🏗️

That's where ETC Byggentreprenad started when they set out to build ETC Hyllie. Not as a developer looking for the safest bet, but as a team that wanted to find out how far bio-based construction could actually go. The crowdfunding wasn't a compromise. It was the right instrument for a project with that kind of ambition, backed by people who wanted to see it happen as much as ETC wanted to build it. 🌾
The result is standing in Malmö. 12 storeys. 65 apartments. CLT structure with EcoCocon straw wall panels.The world's tallest straw building. 🏢

And the institutions that couldn't finance what didn't exist yet? They have a reference point now. So does every developer watching from the sidelines.
The market doesn't have to figure this out from scratch anymore. 🌿
