Say "straw construction" and most architects picture something rustic: exposed timber, natural textures, an eco-cabin look.
This private home in Berango, País Vasco looks nothing like that. A sculptural, monolithic form finished in ventilated ceramic, deep roof overhangs, and glass floors suspended above a courtyard cascade. Nothing about the exterior signals straw.
Here's how it's actually built: the structural core combines load-bearing straw walls with a lightweight glue-laminated timber frame, for a 436.40 m² house. Architects José Luis Barrón Fernández and Juan Ciudad Herrero used that structure to design a triple-height atrium with glass floors, bordered by a waterfall and a cistern that visually extends the pool into the interior. The atrium works as a passive solar chimney: it draws in cool air from contact with the water and releases warm air through motorised rooflights above every room. Because the atrium connects to every room, natural light also reaches the surrounding walls directly, cutting down on artificial lighting. Two heat recovery units, two air-source heat pumps, and a photovoltaic roof tile system with its own battery room complete the passive design, all built to work quietly in the background.
That's the case for EcoCocon on projects like this: the system carries the structural and thermal load, so the design brief never has to bend around the material. Straw becomes the part of the building nobody has to think about, freeing the architect to design exactly what they envisioned.
