The physics was understood. Guidance had been published through the 1990s.

What was missing was a standard anyone was held to.

Then in July 2001, six-year-old Michael Colombini was struck by a steel oxygen cylinder that the magnet tore out of an anaesthesiologist's hands during his scan. He died two days later.

The ACR published its White Paper on MR Safety the following year. It gave the field the four zones, defined who counts as MR personnel, and turned access control from good practice into the expectation. Non-ferrous cylinders became the norm in MR departments. The last week of July became MR Safety Week.

That is 25 years of genuine progress, built by people who refused to let it happen twice.

But we can only maintain these standards with trained personnel. Every zone line and every screening question only holds if the person on shift understands the physics underneath it.

That's the part we work on.

ISMRT is running free virtual safety sessions all week, 27 to 31 July. Worth an hour of anyone's time.

To everyone keeping a scan room safe today: you're the reason the last 25 years worked. ๐Ÿงฒ

Respiratory motion is one of the most common challenges in abdominal and chest MRI.

When a patient breathes during an un-gated scan, the anatomy moves during image acquisition.
This can create severe wave-like artifacts across the image and reduce diagnostic image quality.

In this video, we show exactly how breathing affects MRI images, why breath-hold instructions matter, and how respiratory gating helps create sharp and static abdominal images.

Cardiac motion is one of the biggest challenges in cardiac MRI. Because the heart moves continuously, MRI data can be acquired at different points in the cardiac cycle, which can create severe blur and reduce diagnostic image quality.

In this video, we show exactly how physiological motion affects cardiac MRI images, why ECG-gating is needed, and how cardiac gating helps create a sharp and static image of the heart.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง What an incredible three days in London at Dr. Kanalโ€™s MRI Safety Course!

Connecting with so many driven delegates and demonstrating the Corsmed simulator at our booth has been a fantastic experience. It is always inspiring to be surrounded by professionals who are so passionate about advancing our field.

A massive thank you to Barbara Nugent, Emanuel Kanal, and MRI Safety Matters for hosting such a stellar, well-organized event.

Next stop: We can't wait to see you all at the MRI Safety Updates and Innovations Day (MRSUID) on October 31.
