It’s not often that an intern’s first visit to the office occurs decades before their first day on the job.

We are delighted to welcome Joel as our newest intern at Furuno Sweden; he is returning to an office he once visited as a child, with his grandfather, a Furuno dealer from the 1970s to the 2000s. Years later, Joel is back, this time to build his own future in the marine engineering industry.

Joel is currently studying an Associate’s degree in Marine Engineering at Uddevalla University, with the goal of becoming a Marine Service Engineer. During his approximately 12-week internship, he will gain hands-on experience working with Furuno technology. He has a strong interest in sonar and fishfinder technology, and he is also eager to learn more about radio and GNSS measurements.

It is a pleasure to see the past, present and future come together in such a meaningful way, and we are delighted to support Joel as he develops his skills and experiences here at Furuno Sweden. Welcome aboard, Joel!

The offshore season doesn’t wait, and neither do the people who keep it moving. Recently, we welcomed 21 deep-sea and workboat crew members to our Gothenburg office for a focused session on the technologies supporting safer, smarter operations at sea in 2026.
Conversations quickly zeroed in on anti-jamming and spoofing solutions, with strong interest in how effective these devices really are.
We also explored the Smart Bridge NXT. Guests had the opportunity to step into the system, interact with its functionality, and see how it supports real-time decision-making.
Beyond the discussions, guests toured the workshop, got an overview of new training courses, and enjoyed a well-earned lunch buffet.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us! These exchanges keep us sharp and ensure we continue building solutions that meet the realities of life offshore.

From Gothenborg to Greece! Our Cyber Security & Smart Bridge expert, Sean
recently attended a 3-day conference in Athens focused on the evolving digital safety requirements shaping modern navigation systems.

The priority of the visit is to deepen understanding of HermAce integration possibilities with Smart Bridge NXT, and how these can be developed further to support more secure and efficient system architectures onboard.

At the same time, the conference provides an important opportunity to revisit and strengthen knowledge of IACS UR E26 and E27, with the aim of gaining deeper insight into how interpretations and best practices can support ongoing compliance and future certification work. This is especially relevant as we continue exploring NK certification pathways and how we can further enhance our documentation and approvals going forward.

We look forward to his return to the office with a few boxes of loukoumia and plenty of cyber insights to share.
