Aventail for an Italian armet in handmade 4,5mm welded rings!
There are several fantastic plate armourers doing amazing work, but those armours are often complemented with mail not matching the quality of the plate. With mail looking and acting the part it will enhance the plate and everything will work as it should.
This aventail is made from 4,5mm rings with 1,2mm wire. It creates a dense flowing type of mail in a perfect balance of mobility and protection!

If you also want to take your mail to the next level, send me a message to discuss your project!

15th century mail collar in handmade 6 an 7mm welded steel and brass rings!
The standing collar is made from 6mm rings in 1,8mm wire making it very dense and protective. A row of small handmade solid rings keeps the top of the collar together.
The mantle is made from 7mm rings with 1,4mm wire and is a smooth and flexible weave draping over the shoulders. The long overlap makes it more comfortable, provides double a layer of mail in the back of the neck, which is often more exposed and prevents any gaps from opening.

Currently set up for a ca 40cm neck but can fit a 39-43cm neck and modifications are possible if necessary.

1400€ excl vat

The curassier armour now has a helmet! This close helmet does not belong to the original armour the rest is based on, but one housed at Skokloster castle in Sweden. I intend to at some point make the one thet belongs to the armour, which is more open faced with a bar visor. This more protective verdion would allow for at least some harnischfechten, even though the vision slits are quite large.

Mail collar for a 15th century soldier!
This mail collar is made for a representation of a 15th century soldier. It is made with slightly larger rings than a knight/man at arms would wear, but offer similar protection. The heavy standing collar is made from 7mm rings with 2mm wire and the mantle is made from 8mm rings with 1,5mm wire. The fittings are simple with just a small amount of decoration and there is no brass borders.
It is made from handmade all welded rings with a row of handmade solid rings at the top.
Despite its simplistic design it is very strong and the rings are smooth and comfortable on the inside, the standing collar is dense enough to offer some blunt force protection, but it is loose enough to have good mobility.

This collar is already sold, but if you are interested in a similar collar or any other custom project you can send me a message!

Some progress on the 17th century cuirassier armour! Now only the helmet and gauntlets remain!
I found making the arm articulation trickier than I thought it would be because it has no intermideate articulation lames, which makes the joint work smoothly without gaps. Now it had very little margins to work decently and some gaps was unavoidable, even on the original. Also the pauldrons has very few pieces, which made it pretty nice and sculptural to work with, but it is more difficult to get a wide range of mobility. I guess this design is good and quick for someone very used to making it and knows exactly how to make it work with so few part, but for me, the next ones will be based on examples with more pieces!

A small test piece of 14th century style germanic mail with flat solids and half flat/rounded welded rings with the typical watershed overlap.
I am very happy that I am now able to make convincing looking rings of this type!

New tools= new possibillities!
I made a new tool that allows me to use a wire cross section that was very common during the 15th century, especially in germanic mail. The bottom side is rounded and the top is flat. Here is a test piece I made in 7mm welded rings!

Early 17th century munition grade cuirassier armour in the making! It will have a linseed blackened hammer finish.
I am making this as a practice piece for a couple of future projects, but also for an event in april that I hope to be able to wear this armour at! There is a few new things I haven't tried before, the rotation stove pipe joint and the geometry of the more enveloping pauldrons were interesting to figure out. There are a few things I would like to improve for future attempts, but it will do the job!

Here is a bigger project that I have worked on during the winter!
A german late 15th century style collar in handmade welded rings. It is made with 4mm rings in the dense collar and 4,5mm rings in the mantle. The mantle is extra wide to cover the gap in a v neck backplate and contains over 16000 rings.

The silky feel of this smooth and fine weave is very satisfying!

Aventail for a german armet!
Earlier this summer I had the privilege of being part of Tobias Capwells latest Insbruck armour project by making an aventail for this wonderful armet made by Albert Collins.
It consists three panels of 4,5mm handmade welded steel and brass rings with evenly spaced expansions that gives the panels a smooth curve. The back piece has a central point expansion to match the V shape of the armet. They are stitched to a strip of oil tanned cowhide.
