Pick your helmet in the spare part finder, and you'll see every part with its part number. User instructions can be searched and downloaded, documents for every model are in one place, and the map shows your nearest distributor.

Did you know? The auto-darkening welding helmet was born in Sweden, and this year it turns 50.

The first photo shows Åke Hörnell's thesis research at Chalmers University of Technology, where he measured the light from welding arcs. That research gave Åke an idea: a welding glass that stays clear until the arc strikes, then darkens on its own. In 1976, he built the first prototype.

Before that, welders nodded the dark visor down and struck the arc without being able to see the joint. The first auto-darkening filters switched in about 1/100th of a second. Today's AKETEK® VIEW does it in 0.1 ms, 100 times faster.

Fifty years on, Åke is still developing new technology and new helmets to make welding safer and easier.

🌘 CAN YOU WATCH THE ECLIPSE THROUGH A WELDING HELMET?

We’ve had this question a few times today. With a modern auto-darkening helmet, the short answer is no.

Auto-darkening welding helmets are designed to react to the intense light from a welding arc. Sunlight may not trigger the filter in the same way, so the helmet can remain in its much lighter state while you’re looking directly at the Sun.
The filter may still provide UV and IR protection in its light state, but that alone does not make it safe for solar viewing. Visible sunlight is also extremely intense, and the shade ranges used for everyday welding are not a substitute for a filter designed specifically for looking at the Sun.
And eclipses can be deceptive. The Sun may look dimmer when most of it is covered, but the exposed part is still as intense as normal sunlight. That can make it easier to look for longer than you normally would, even though retinal damage can happen without immediate pain.

The same goes for regular sunglasses. Even good sunglasses with UV protection are nowhere near dark enough for direct solar viewing.
For the eclipse, use certified solar viewing glasses or a handheld solar viewer compliant with ISO 12312-2.
