🌘 CAN YOU WATCH THE ECLIPSE THROUGH A WELDING HELMET?

We’ve had this question a few times today. With a modern auto-darkening helmet, the short answer is no.

Auto-darkening welding helmets are designed to react to the intense light from a welding arc. Sunlight may not trigger the filter in the same way, so the helmet can remain in its much lighter state while you’re looking directly at the Sun.
The filter may still provide UV and IR protection in its light state, but that alone does not make it safe for solar viewing. Visible sunlight is also extremely intense, and the shade ranges used for everyday welding are not a substitute for a filter designed specifically for looking at the Sun.
And eclipses can be deceptive. The Sun may look dimmer when most of it is covered, but the exposed part is still as intense as normal sunlight. That can make it easier to look for longer than you normally would, even though retinal damage can happen without immediate pain.

The same goes for regular sunglasses. Even good sunglasses with UV protection are nowhere near dark enough for direct solar viewing.
For the eclipse, use certified solar viewing glasses or a handheld solar viewer compliant with ISO 12312-2.

Det har varit otroligt givande att samla både lokala industrier och skolor från närområdet under samma tak. Den här typen av nära samarbeten är helt avgörande för industrins framtid och den så viktiga kompetensförsörjningen.
