Platform Rig Types & Applications In Oil & Gas - DRILLING MANUAL |
In this article, we will explore the different types of platform rigs used in the oil and gas industry and their various applications. We will start by defining what a platform rig is and its purpose. Then, we will discuss the types of platform rigs, including the steel jacket structure, gravity structure, compliant tower, and tension leg platform. For each type, we will outline their pros and cons, components, and advantages.
Platform rigs are large steel or concrete structures used for exploring and producing oil and gas in the open sea. They provide a secure foundation for drilling equipment and production facilities, allowing companies to extract fossil fuels from the ocean floor. The different types of platform rigs include fixed platforms like the steel jacket structure, which consists of steel tubular legs and cross-members for rigidity. Gravity structures are made of concrete and rely on their weight to maintain position. Compliant towers are tall, slim structures designed to sway slightly with wave action, while tension leg platforms are anchored to the seabed with vertical tendons to eliminate vessel heave.
The steel jacket structure offers the advantage of supporting large deck loads and can be transported in sections. However, it has high initial and maintenance costs and is subject to corrosion. Gravity structures have a large storage capacity and are more tolerant to overloading and seawater exposure than steel jacket platforms. Compliant towers provide a temporary solution that can operate in moderate environments, while tension leg platforms are detachable and can be used in deep waters. Each type of platform rig has its own advantages and disadvantages, making them suitable for different applications depending on water depths, environmental conditions, and project requirements.
