How Peter the Great Made Gravity Empty a Dry Dock.

In the early 18th century, draining a dry dock could take an enormous amount of time. Peter the Great approached the problem differently.
At Kronstadt, engineers created a system where water flowed by gravity into a lower reservoir instead of relying only on pumps. The dock could be emptied far faster, while the stored water was pumped out later using wind power and eventually steam machinery.
The Kronstadt dock system opened in 1752 — a remarkable example of engineering built around one simple idea: let gravity do the hardest work.
