Process engineers and quality teams often evaluate plasma nitriding based on the initial process price.

That number does not represent total process cost.

Plasma nitriding runs at lower temperatures than the salt bath. Less distortion. Which means less re-machining, tighter dimensional control, and lower rejection rates. And no hazardous waste disposal cost — ever.
When total production cost is included, conventional heat treatment can be 20–40% higher than the quoted price suggests.

A customer was machining a stainless steel component from raw material. 30+ operations. Multi-face setup. Long cycle time.

We cast it instead. 4 finishing operations. Same tolerances. Lower Total Cost.

This isn't about replacing machining. CNC is the right tool for many things. The problem is when it becomes the default for geometries it was never the efficient answer for.

Investment casting moves the complexity into the tooling — once. After that, every part comes out near-net-shape.
The CNC step becomes finishing, not manufacturing.
The crossover point is usually somewhere around: internal features, thin walls, undercuts, or multi-face geometry. If your part has more than one of these, the machining route deserves a second look.

De ce o piesă turnată și nitrurată în același loc costă mai puțin decât două surse separate?

Mulți producători lucrează cu un furnizor pentru turnare și alt furnizor pentru tratamentul de suprafață. Pare normal. De fapt, e o sursă ascunsă de costuri și risc:

· Transport între furnizori — timp și bani
· Două inspecții de recepție și două set de documente
· Responsabilitate divizată când o piesă nu iese conform
· Re-calificare dublă la orice schimbare de furnizor

Plasmaterm acoperă întregul flux: turnare de precizie → prelucrări mecanice → nitrurare în plasmă → piesă gata de montaj.

Unele colaborări încep la târguri. Cele potrivite devin parteneriate pe termen lung.

Plasmaterm va fi prezent la Metal Show & TIB 2026, în București, între 12–15 mai. Vom fi acolo pentru discuții directe, aplicate, cu ingineri, responsabili de achiziții și manageri de producție care caută soluții fiabile — nu doar furnizori.

Acoperim întregul lanț de fabricație: turnare de precizie (investment casting), prelucrări mecanice, nitrurare în plasmă și tratamente termice. Livrăm componente complexe, gata de montaj, cu accent pe consistență și control real al calității.

Same material, completely different behavior?

Recently, we worked with two components made from the same material: 1.4122 stainless steel, in annealed condition, with nearly identical hardness (~27–33 HRC). On paper, there was no difference.

In production, however, the reality quickly proved otherwise. One component was easy to machine, and thread tapping was stable and predictable. With the other, taps kept breaking unexpectedly, without any obvious warning.

The difference was not explained by hardness or nominal material grade, but by the microstructure. In the first case, we observed a relatively uniform, finer structure with a more evenly distributed carbide phase. In the second, the microstructure clearly showed a strongly dendritic cast structure with a pronounced interdendritic carbide network.

In practice, this means the cutting tool does not encounter a homogeneous material, but continuously alternating zones of different hardness: a softer matrix followed by very hard chromium carbides, then softer regions again. This variation leads to unstable cutting conditions, fluctuating loads, and ultimately tool failure.

The key takeaway for us was that “same material” does not necessarily mean “same behavior.” For cast components, cooling rate, solidification conditions, and the degree of segregation can be just as critical as the nominal material specification.
Microstructure often remains invisible in day-to-day production, yet its effects are very real: tool life, scrap rate, cost, and ultimately product reliability.

Our standard Tuesday.

Our client brought us rings with intricate 3D geometry and wall thicknesses sitting right at the lower boundary of investment casting feasibility. At that scale, misrun risk climbs fast — and shell building offers almost no margin to compensate.
We didn't apply a standard process window. We recalibrated shell parameters specifically for that geometry, ran it as a controlled test, and held dimensions within specification.
The result confirmed what we already know: complex metal geometries aren't the exception in our work. They're the core of it.
Shell parameters are engineered per geometry — not per routine.
