Icepronav Engineering SRL, part of the ICE Group ICEPRONAV Engineering SRL (ICE ENG SRL) is part of the ICE Marine Design Group of companies.

With a 60-year track record we are one of Europe’s largest independent ship design consultancies. ICEPRONAV ENGINEERING SRL is the Romanian subsidiary of the International Contract Engineering (“ICE”) Group - one of Europe’s largest independent ship design and marine engineering consultancies, with clients world-wide. Having a history of nearly 50 years of ship design, most of ICE’s activities are

now in the offshore oil, gas and renewable energy fields. ICE offers a complete range of design services from FEED studies, conceptual and basic design, development of Class drawings, detail design, and production information to its clients in the shipbuilding, naval construction and offshore energy industries. ICE also advises clients on matters such as build strategy, project management, shipyard layout, procurement and productivity. The Group’s robust project management systems and substantial capacity enables even big multi-discipline projects to be executed timely and professionally under one responsibility. Availability of several proprietary ICE-developed designs can in many cases enable quick project start-ups.

The experience, knowledge and technical capability of our employees remain central to ICEPRONAV Engineering SRL’s long-term success.

Marian Maricel Mocanu, Technical Consultant and former Project Chief Engineer, joined ICEPRONAV in 1972 after graduating from the Polytechnic Institute of Galați. During a career spanning more than four decades within the Machinery and Piping Department, he contributed to major commercial and naval projects, later serving as Team Leader, Department Manager and Project Chief Engineer.

Among the projects he remembers most strongly is the Royal Navy of Oman ocean patrol vessel programme, commissioned in 2015, where he served as Project Chief Engineer. He continues to emphasise the importance of teamwork and supporting younger engineers throughout project delivery.

Reflecting on his career, he notes: “Everything I did, I did with pleasure, because I loved ships and the sense of camaraderie.”

Although officially retired since 2014, he continues to support ICEPRONAV through technical consultancy work and intern training activities, helping transfer engineering knowledge and practical experience to the next generation of specialists.

Today is International Day for Women in Maritime, recognising the contribution of women across the global maritime sector both at sea and ashore.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) states that women make up less than 20% of the onshore maritime workforce globally. At ICE Marine Design, women make up 37% of our engineering and design workforce, and their work spans the full breadth of what modern ship design and offshore engineering involves: naval architecture, structural design, machinery and piping systems, electrical and automation engineering, outfitting, project support and technical coordination.

Today we are sharing perspectives from five colleagues across those disciplines on career development, technical challenges and what it means to build a long-term career in a complex, internationally demanding industry.

This year’s IMO theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence”, asks what moves commitment into action. For us, that starts with the people doing the work.

SwitcH2’s Project Atlantico received Project of National Interest (PIN) status from the Portuguese Government earlier this year, reinforcing the strategic relevance of the offshore floating green ammonia development.

ICE Marine Design Group continues to support development of the FPSO concept, including hull design and associated marine systems. As the project has evolved, the concept has also been refined to accommodate updated topside requirements, reflecting the iterative nature of early-stage floating production developments.

The PIN designation reinforces the strategic relevance of the project and highlights the growing role of floating solutions in enabling large-scale deployment of low-carbon fuels.

As part of our 60th year, we continue the Alumni Review series with a profile of Dr.-Ing. Jean Sever Popovici.

After joining ICEPRONAV in 1973, he contributed to vessel development projects, hydrodynamic research and propulsion analysis. He later became General Manager of ICEPRONAV before serving as Country Chief Executive in Romania for Bureau Veritas.

His career reflects the long-term technical contribution of ICEPRONAV alumni across the maritime industry.
