🎓 SECOVE at Qualifica 2026: Bringing Young People Closer to Skills for the Energy Transition⚡

Between 25 and 28 March, the SECOVE project was present at Qualifica 2026, one of Portugal’s largest education, training and youth fairs, held at Exponor in Porto, through the participation of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP).

The event provided an opportunity to present the project to students and future professionals, promoting awareness of the challenges of the energy transition and the growing importance of technical and digital skills in the sustainable energy sector.

Throughout the initiative, participants explored innovative learning resources and approaches promoted by SECOVE, reinforcing the role of specialised training in preparing new generations for the evolving demands of the labour market.

SECOVE’s participation in Qualifica also represented an opportunity to strengthen connections with the educational community, encouraging young people to pursue pathways linked to sustainability, innovation and emerging technologies 🌍

🎙️ Promoting Inclusion in STEM: Giving Voice to Women’s Experiences

Aligned with the objectives of the SECOVE project, INOVA+ is promoting the podcast “O Engenho de ser Mulher no Engenho”, an initiative that highlights women’s experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

Through real-life testimonies, the episodes explore key skills such as adaptability, communication and organisation, which are essential for building careers in fast-evolving sectors like sustainable energy ⚡

The conversations also underline the importance of support networks, collaboration and inclusive working environments, reinforcing the role of diversity in fostering innovation and talent retention 🤝

This initiative contributes to the broader goals of SECOVE by encouraging reflection on skills development and the need for more inclusive and market-oriented training pathways.

🍃Mapping green skills: what qualifications companies will need — and how VET should respond

The transition to sustainable energy systems is not only transforming technologies but is also reshaping labour markets. As industries adopt renewable energy solutions, digital monitoring systems, and circular economy practices, the demand for green skills is rising quickly across sectors such as energy, construction and manufacturing.

📢This raises a key question:
What qualifications will companies actually need, and how should VET respond?

In many cases, the answer is not about creating entirely new job profiles, but about evolving existing ones. Electricians may increasingly specialize in photovoltaic systems, building technicians may focus on energy-efficient infrastructure and maintenance professionals may work with smart monitoring platforms that optimize energy consumption.

These 👥roles combine traditional technical expertise with new capabilities in:
- Renewable energy technologies
- Energy efficiency solutions
- Digital monitoring tools
- Sustainability principles
- Regulatory and compliance awareness

For Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions, this makes skills mapping a strategic priority. To stay aligned with labor market needs, training programs should:
- Integrate practical modules on renewable energy systems
- Include energy management and digital monitoring tools
- Strengthen collaboration with industry partners
- Adopt modular and flexible learning structures
- Support continuous professional development for teachers

👉By aligning training with emerging industry needs, VET can play a decisive role in building the workforce needed for a low-carbon economy.

💡Innovation competitions in VET: preparing students for green-tech challenges

Innovation competitions can be a powerful tool in Vocational Education and Training (VET), turning learning into a hands-on, problem-solving experience. In the context of 🍃sustainability and the energy transition, these competitions challenge students to develop solutions to real environmental and technological issues while building the skills they will need in the workplace.

👉Defining a clear and relevant problem is the first step toward creating solutions with real impact, but technical knowledge alone is not enough.
Green-tech challenges often require multidisciplinary collaboration, bringing together expertise in energy systems, electronics, digital technologies and design thinking.

👉Another key element is prototyping and experimentation. Testing ideas through small-scale prototypes, simulations or digital models.

👉Communication also matters. Being able to clearly explain the problem, the innovation, and its environmental value is essential and helps them develop both entrepreneurial and presentation skills.

The real value of these initiatives lies in the learning process as students gain experience in:
- solving real-world challenges
- working in teams
- applying technical knowledge in practice
- thinking creatively and entrepreneurially
- building confidence for future careers in green industries

By integrating 💡innovation competitions into VET, institutions can foster creativity, sustainability awareness and innovation capacity among the next generation of technicians and engineers.

🔜In "SECOVE" we have organized several national competitions and a final competition will happen in the final event in Athens.
