🌍 Innovative Shelter Solutions for Gaza: Building with Earth
At GIRIH, we believe in using local resources to provide sustainable, emergency solutions for displaced communities. Today, I am excited to share our detailed plan for constructing emergency shelters from Earth—an approach that provides more protection and privacy compared to traditional tents.
🔧 Step-by-Step Process:
📌Resource Assessment: Identify the necessary materials and tools.
📌Soil Selection: Choose the right type of soil for building.
📌Foundation Work: Lay down a strong, stable base from rubble.
📌Walls Construction: Utilize Rammed Earth.
📌Roofing: Ensure proper covering for durability and weather protection.
🤝 This project embodies community collaboration, inspired by the traditional Palestinian spirit of "al-'awneh" (community support). It is designed for those who currently live in tents, offering them a more weather-resistant and dignified living space.
💡 Proven Expertise: Girih’s team has extensive experience in designing and supervising earth structures across various parts of Palestine, including north and south Gaza, with international support over the past decade. These structures have stood the test of time and are maintained with appropriate care.
🌱 The proposed shelter uses the rammed earth technique, known globally for its resilience in hot climates and its adaptability to humid environments with proper moisture protection. Our approach isn't a call to return to primitive living but a practical solution that uses available resources to alleviate the current hardship of the displaced.
Our initiative project is purely technical and humanitarian, aiming to give people a choice—whether to develop and adapt this idea or remain in tent settlements
