Most electrical problems on a production line don't come from bad components or wrong calculations. They come from a gap between what was designed on paper and what was actually built - a wiring detail that didn't make it into the documentation, a revision that was applied to the cabinet but not the schematic, a control logic change that nobody traced back to the original drawings.

At GFE Solutions, we cover electrical engineering from the first schematic through to commissioning support. That means control cabinet design, circuit documentation, component selection and wiring layouts - all done in EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical, and all kept consistent with the mechanical and automation work running in parallel. Meet Olena Onufriienko, HR Manager at GFE Solutions - the person who decides who belongs on the team, and then makes sure they actually want to stay.

Olena studied at the Kyiv Economic Institute of Management, but the more interesting part of her story is what she has built with it. HR in an engineering company is a specific challenge - you are not just filling positions, you are finding people who can operate in a technically demanding environment and hold themselves to a high standard. Getting that consistently right requires both good judgment and genuine curiosity about people, and Olena has developed both.

What sets her apart is a personal interest in medicine and human health - not as a profession, but as a subject she finds genuinely compelling. It quietly shapes the way she approaches her work: not just whether people are performing, but whether they are actually doing well and whether the environment around them makes sense.

Outside of work, she hikes and cycles - a good combination for someone who spends her days thinking about other people and knows when she needs to step away from it.

Engineering Fact: 52.5% of science & technology workers in the EU are women

52.5% of all science and technology workers in the EU are women. That is 42.8 million people out of 81.6 million total - not a projected figure, not a best-case scenario. Eurostat's 2025 data.

Latvia leads at 62.4%, followed by Hungary's Great Plain and North region at 61.1% and Estonia at 60.5%. These countries have been near the top of this ranking for years, and the gap between them and the EU average is wide enough to suggest it is not accidental. Some parts of Europe simply built their technical workforce differently - and it shows in the numbers.

The bottom of the ranking tells a different story. Corsica at 42.7%, Malta at 46.0%, France's Centre region at 47.2%. The spread from top to bottom is nearly 20 percentage points within the same economic bloc, and it tracks closely with industry structure. Regions where science and technology employment is concentrated in healthcare, research, and public services score higher. Regions where it leans toward heavy industry and manufacturing score lower.

That last part matters for anyone working in industrial engineering. Manufacturing is one of the fields where the gap is still clearly visible - and the women closing it are not doing so quietly. They are leading projects, running teams, and delivering work that the industry is increasingly built on.

The 52.5% is a real number. In some parts of Europe, a majority-female science and technology workforce has been the norm for longer than most people in the industry realise.

Case Study: Profile bending machine documentation - Inventor & Vault

Good documentation doesn't get much attention until it's missing. Then suddenly nobody can find the current version of a drawing, a change gets made to the wrong revision, and the production team is working from a file that was superseded three months ago.

That's roughly the situation we walked into on this project. A manufacturer needed complete technical documentation for a profile bending machine - assembly drawings, part drawings, BOM - all done in Autodesk Inventor and properly managed through Vault. The file structure had grown organically over time, which is a polite way of saying it had broken references, inconsistent naming, and multiple versions of the same parts sitting in different folders with nothing to tell you which one was current.

We rebuilt the structure, resolved the references, standardised the naming conventions, and made sure the Vault database actually reflected the real state of the design. The output was a clean, complete documentation package that the production and maintenance teams could use without calling engineering every time they needed to find something.

It's not glamorous work. But it's the kind of thing that quietly determines whether a production handover takes two days or two weeks.

The real cost of engineering delays in manufacturing

A two-week delay at the engineering stage rarely stays a two-week delay. By the time it reaches production planning, procurement and the customer, the actual impact is usually two to three times larger - because everything downstream was scheduled around a delivery date that no longer exists.

The direct cost is visible and easy to measure. What's harder to quantify is the chain reaction: components that can't be ordered because drawings aren't finalised, production slots that get reassigned and aren't easily recovered, customer relationships that absorb one delay without complaint and start looking at alternatives after the second.

Building a physical prototype to find out that a component fails under load is one of the more expensive ways to learn something that simulation could have shown you at the design stage. Finite Element Analysis works by dividing a 3D model into thousands of small elements and calculating how each one responds to loads, pressure, vibration or temperature - revealing where stress concentrates, where deflection exceeds acceptable limits, and where the design carries more material than it actually needs.

That last point is as commercially relevant as the first. Over-engineered components add weight and material cost, and those numbers compound across an assembly and a production run.

At GFE Solutions, we run FEM/FEA as part of the design process - not as a final sign-off exercise. The difference matters: when the analysis runs early enough to influence the geometry, the results are actually useful. By the time a design is frozen, simulation can only confirm what's already been decided.

Meet Dominik Nowakowski, Team Lead at GFE Solutions.

Dominik is one of those engineers who likes to understand how things work not only on the screen, but also in real life. During his career, he worked on projects related to robotics, production machinery, internal transport systems, sheet metal processing, hydraulics, and automation. Early on, he also spent a lot of time in the workshop assembling machines he had designed himself, which gave him a very practical approach to engineering work and production processes.

At GFE Solutions, Dominik leads engineering projects and supports his team in solving technical challenges in a calm and structured way. His experience across different industries helps him quickly adapt to new projects and understand what will actually work outside the CAD environment.

Outside of work, Dominik spends most of his time with his family. He enjoys bike rides with his kids, building Lego sets together, and slowing things down a bit after busy projects. One of his biggest passions is analog photography — he shoots on film, develops photos manually, and prints them himself in a darkroom he built together with his father. He is also fascinated by aviation and hopes that one day he will finally get his sailplane license.

Engineering fact: Why G-code still rules CNC manufacturing

G-code was developed in the 1950s. Decades later, it still drives the majority of CNC machines running in production facilities around the world — and the reasons why are more practical than nostalgic.

The language is explicit and deterministic. Every line tells the machine precisely where to move, at what speed, and with which tool. There is no abstraction layer between the programmer and the machine, which means that when something goes wrong on the shop floor, an experienced CNC engineer can open the file, read through the code, and locate the problem directly — without navigating layers of software interpretation.

Modern CAM systems generate G-code automatically from 3D models, so most programmers today rarely write it by hand. But the ones who can read and edit it manually are the ones who can actually optimise a toolpath, reduce cycle time, and catch problems before a single part is cut.

Alternatives like STEP-NC exist and have genuine technical advantages, but displacing a standard that runs on millions of installed machines worldwide is a slow process, regardless of how good the replacement is.

24 on-site visits to Germany over seven years. That number says more about how this engagement works than any service description could.

The client manufactures experimental synthetic fiber production lines — machines where mechanical design, electrical systems, and fluid dynamics are all interdependent. On that kind of equipment, the control logic can't be developed from a frozen spec. It has to evolve in parallel with the mechanical design, respond to decisions being made in real time, and reflect the actual behavior of the machine — not a model of it.

So our engineer joined the core project team from the start. Not as an external consultant brought in at commissioning, but as a permanent member sitting alongside the lead and design engineers throughout every project. The work is done in TIA Portal with SCADA integration. Between visits — continuous remote engagement. The arrangement has been running since July 2019 and keeps growing in scope.

Some things only happen when you stay long enough.
