💡 Can ESMIL membrane technology be used to concentrate monomer-containing process streams?

This was the challenge presented to us by a customer operating in the advanced plastics recycling and biotechnology sector. Today, we can confidently say that the answer is: yes. ✅

The project objectives were:
1️⃣ Increase the concentration of sodium sulphate (Na₂SO₄)
2️⃣ Reduce the level of dissolved salts
3️⃣ Produce a monomer fraction meeting the quality requirements for sale

To evaluate the process, we carried out a staged pilot testing programme using nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO).

▶ NF was used to concentrate sodium sulphate and monomer-rich streams
▶ RO was applied to polish the NF permeate by reducing dissolved salt content

The results achieved:
✔️ Recoveries of up to 76% for NF and up to 84% for RO
✔️ Conductivity increased from approximately 16,370–22,840 μS/cm to 50,960–59,310 μS/cm during NF concentration
✔️ RO permeate conductivity reduced from approximately 350 μS/cm to around 70 μS/cm
✔️ Effective sodium sulphate concentration combined with significant dissolved salt reduction through RO polishing

Following the successful trials, the customer moved forward with a dedicated 1.8 m³/h pilot system designed and manufactured by ESMIL using 4040 membrane modules. The mobile skid platform can operate with UF, NF and RO membranes, supporting further process development and optimisation. 📊

👉 It quickly became clear that the project had potential far beyond the pilot stage. The experience gained from operating the pilot unit paved the way for the next scale-up phase, and we are now developing a full-scale containerised membrane system based on 8040 membrane modules.

This project reflects the way we approach membrane solutions at ESMIL. We start by validating the technology under real operating conditions and then scale the process step by step towards full industrial implementation.

As a result, the final solution is based on real process data and proven performance, ensuring it is tailored to the customer’s application rather than relying solely on design assumptions.

ESMIL Catenary Screen in a New Bypass Channel at the Sucha Beskidzka Municipal Utility Facility (Poland)

As part of the expansion of the wastewater infrastructure in Sucha Beskidzka, a new bypass channel was constructed for the existing wastewater channel. The facility was equipped with an ESMIL KR 1054 catenary screen designed to remove large and medium-sized solids carried by municipal wastewater.
The unit was designed to operate at an average daily flow rate of 7,000 m³/day.

Key screen parameters:
⚙️ Bar spacing: 10 mm
⚙️ Unit height: 8.75 m
⚙️ Width: 1 m
⚙️ Screening width: 810 mm

The screen design allows the unit to be lifted above the chamber level, providing convenient access for inspection, maintenance and servicing.🔧

💡 The addition of the bypass channel supports the continuous operation of the treatment facility during maintenance activities and future infrastructure upgrades.

🔧 ESMIL Drum Screen commissioned at the facility of a leading UK jam producer

We have recently completed another project for the food processing industry, including the manufacture, delivery, and commissioning of an ESMIL drum screen. The unit was installed at the facility of one of the UK's leading jam manufacturers.

The drum screen removes solid particles from process wastewater containing seeds, peels, fruit pulp, and other fruit residues. Its 2 mm screening aperture enables effective separation of these contaminants at the preliminary treatment stage.

To ensure stable and continuous operation, the unit is equipped with a scraper mechanism and a spray nozzle cleaning system that continuously removes solids accumulated on the screening surface.

Manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel, the drum screen was designed to operate at a flow rate of 20 m³/h and handle up to 1 tonne of screenings per week.

ESMIL drum screens are widely used across the food processing industry, including in:

ESMIL Group equipment for the modernization of a municipal WWTP in Lutsk (Ukraine)

A comprehensive modernization of the municipal wastewater treatment plant is underway in Lutsk, Ukraine. The project is being carried out at the facilities of the Lutsk municipal water utility and covers the entire treatment process. Once completed, the plant will have a capacity of 60,000 m³/day.

The modernization is being implemented in four stages. The scope includes the reconstruction of primary clarifiers and pumping stations, construction of retention tanks and new pipelines, expansion of the mechanical treatment section, and implementation of sludge dewatering systems.
ESMIL Group is involved in all stages of the project, supplying equipment for each phase of the modernization.

🔧 Primary clarifier upgrade
In April 2026, the first 30-m diameter ESMIL radial scraper was commissioned. The unit is made of stainless steel and equipped with systems for sludge collection and surface scum removal.
The optimized rake design ensures uniform sludge removal without re-suspension and efficient transport to the central hopper, resulting in improved sedimentation performance.

Key features of ESMIL radial scrapers:
✔ ability to adapt to existing infrastructure without structural modifications to the tank
✔ high corrosion resistance and long service life
✔ energy-efficient operation and reduced structural loads
✔ stable continuous operation
✔ flexible process automation
✔ low operating costs

The next phase includes further modernization of the remaining clarifiers using the same technological solutions.

🔧 Next stages of the Lutsk WWTP modernization
The project is progressing according to schedule, and ESMIL equipment is being gradually integrated into the plant.

The upcoming stages include:
▶ expansion of the mechanical treatment section (screens, conveying equipment, and screenings handling)
▶ installation of aerated grit chambers and grit washers
▶ modernization of sludge treatment using MDQ multi-disc screw presses
▶ installation of penstocks and stop gates with electric drives

💡 The expansion of the mechanical treatment section will improve process efficiency, increase the level of automation, and reduce the load on downstream treatment stages.

A global cosmetics industry leader once again chooses the MDQ dewatering press (ESMIL-Tsurumi) 💪

After years of operation, our customer decided to take the next step and increase the capacity of the ESMIL multi-disc screw press by upgrading the unit from MDQ-403C to MDQ-403 CL (long).

💡 Instead of replacing the entire installation, a simpler solution was applied: replacing the existing dewatering drums with a longer version of the same diameter.

The result? A 25% increase in capacity. 📈
▶ dry solids throughput will increase from 180 to 225 kg DS/h
▶ hydraulic capacity will increase from 4 to 5 m³/h
All other operating parameters remain unchanged.

The MDQ multi-disc screw press operates on flotation sludge with a dry solids content of approx. 4.5%, processing more than 2,600 m³ of sludge per month (30–35% DS in the dewatered cake).

This project shows that increasing capacity does not always require major investments. In the case of the MDQ press, its performance can be adapted to current process requirements while maintaining the existing installation. ⚙️
