Recent Earthquake

Rawalpindi Earthquake, February 15, 2025, Potwar, Pakistan

The Rawalpindi earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred at a depth of
6.8 Km in the northern Potwar The Potwar or sub-Himalaya tectonically lies between the active Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and the Salt Range Thrust (SRT).

The cover sequence of the Indian plate is folded and imbricated in Potwar. This earthquake is related to the thin skin Rawat Fault (RF).

You people need the detail active tectonics and seismic geohazards microzonation along the RF. However, the RF is an active fault. The red zone or highly hazarad zone across the active RF should be one kilometer. There should be no construction in red zone or highly hazarad zone. The areas in the hanging wall of the fault will be more hazardous with respect to the footwall during future earthquakes along RF. The active faults have future chances of earthquake.

The construction in the area should have been according to the seismic geohazards microzonation and building codes.

If no building codes and seismic geohazards microzonation have been used in the past; please retrofit the civil structures for future earthquakes.

I hope we will learn lession from the destruction of October 8, 2005 Muzaffarabad Kashmir earthquake, Pakistan..
