Raising of Tanda Dam, Kohat
Tanda Dam is an off-shore storage reservoir situated approximately 10 km west of Kohat City. It was constructed by WAPDA in September 1967 and subsequently handed over to the Irrigation Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in September 1968. The project comprises the following key components:
• Diversion Barrage with Head Regulator
• Feeder Canal and Tunnel
• Reservoir, Main Dam, and Spillway
• Intake Tower, Outlet, and Canal System
• Access Roads on both sides
The project operates through a diversion system on Kohat Toi Nullah, which diverted flood flows into the reservoir via a feeder canal and feeder tunnel. The dam was originally designed with an operational lifespan of 50 years.
The current project aims to restore the reservoir’s storage capacity, which has significantly decreased due to siltation over nearly five decades of operation. As a result, the reservoir capacity reduced from 78,000 acre-feet to 49,523 acre-feet. To recover the original storage volume, the Irrigation Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa undertook the dam raising and rehabilitation of associated infrastructure.
At present, major physical works have been completed. Once completed, the project will restore the reservoir to its original storage capacity. The project is anticipated to be completed by June 2027.
