The EcoModern Signature Residence is a modern, eco-oriented residential project distinguished by bold architectural geometry, inclined planes, and long-span cantilevered elements. To achieve the desired structural performance while preserving architectural freedom, the residence is designed primarily with structural steel members, leveraging their high strength-to-weight ratio and versatility for complex forms.
Using MIDAS Gen as the primary analysis and design tool, the building is modeled as a fully integrated three-dimensional steel framework consisting of moment frames, braced frames, and plate elements representing composite floor systems and select facade components. This approach enables precise simulation of the building's unique slopes, angles, and cantilevered features.
Key Engineering Focus Areas
1. 3D Finite Element Modeling of Structural Steel Frames:
All primary columns, rafters, slanted beams, and cantilevered assemblies are modeled using beam elements, while critical connection zones and diaphragm components are represented by plate elements to ensure accurate stress distribution.
2. Gravity, Wind, and Seismic Load Analysis using NSCP 2015 Code:
Load computations comply with the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2015, with MIDAS Gen automatically generating load combinations. Special attention is given to torsional and lateral stability due to the building's irregular geometry and eccentric mass distribution.
3. Cantilever and Inclined Steel Member Design:
The residence features multiple inclined frames and extended cantilevers supporting facade overhangs and shading elements. These are optimized for deflection control, buckling resistance, and serviceability under long-term loads.
4. Connection Design Considerations using Design+:
Complex connection zones including welded rigid joints, gusset plates, and bolted end-plate connections are detailed and analyzed using Design+ software to ensure accurate capacity checks for complex angles and spatial configurations.
5. Composite Slab and Floor System Integration:
Steel beams are designed to support composite metal deck slabs, providing efficient diaphragm action, reducing steel tonnage, and maintaining overall stiffness.
6. Sustainability and Eco-Integration:
The steel system is sized to support eco-features such as sloping roof gardens, green roof loads, solar panel zones, and lightweight façade assemblies, reducing embodied carbon and enhancing lifecycle performance. The design accommodates live loads associated with roof landscaping while maintaining structural efficiency.
7. Performance Evaluation:
MIDAS Gen outputs, including stress diagrams, modal analysis results, buckling modes, deflection profiles, and member utilization ratios are reviewed to ensure structural adequacy, safety, and optimized material usage.
Summary:
By combining a steel structural system with advanced modeling in MIDAS Gen and connection design using Design+, the EcoModern Signature Residence achieves its distinctive architectural form while ensuring safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Compliance with NSCP 2015 ensures that all loads--- including gravity, wind, and seismic are properly addressed. Integration of sloping roof gardens and other eco-features demonstrates a commitment to environmentally conscious, future-ready design.
