The Ungka Flyover, connecting Iloilo City and Pavia, was built to help improve traffic flow along one of Iloilo’s major road corridors.

But beneath the structure, its deep foundation system encountered problems. Issues involving the foundation piles led to concerns about the flyover’s stability and contributed to the structure’s uneven settlement.

It’s a reminder that for structures like flyovers, what lies beneath the surface can be just as important as what we see above it.

Mall of Asia, ano tara? 👟

You've probably visited the largest mall in the Philippines—the Mall of Asia.

But did you know this iconic destination stands on reclaimed land along Manila Bay?

While reclaimed land creates valuable space for development, it is generally underlain by soft marine clay and loose sediments. These soils have relatively low bearing capacity and are more susceptible to settlement, making them challenging to build on.

That's why engineers designed MOA with deep foundations, using piles to transfer the building's weight through the weaker soils and into stronger ground below.

WORD OF THE DAY: SETTLEMENT

In engineering context, settlement is the natural downward movement of a building or foundation as the soil beneath it compresses under its weight.

While a certain amount of settlement is normal, excessive settlement may occur if the foundation cannot develop enough capacity to support the structure.
That's why engineers conduct quality control and testing like the Pile Dynamic Analysis Test (PDA test)—to verify that the pile foundation performs as designed before the structure is put into service.
