On June 12, 1898, the Philippines declared its independence from Spanish colonial rule. This historic event took place in Kawit, Cavite, where General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty of the Filipino people and the birth of the Philippine Republic. The declaration was marked by the unfurling of the Philippine flag and the playing of the national anthem, "Lupang Hinirang."

However, the independence was short-lived, as the Treaty of Paris, signed on December 10, 1898, ended the Spanish-American War and ceded the Philippines to the United States. The struggle for true independence continued, culminating in the formal recognition of Philippine sovereignty by the United States on July 4, 1946, after World War II.

The annual celebration of Independence Day on June 12 is a time for Filipinos to reflect on their history, honor their heroes, and celebrate their national identity and freedom.
