This National Day of Remembrance highlights the pursuit of justice for road crash victims, survivors, and their families. The theme of this year's commemoration, which is justice, echoes the need for collective accountability on the road and the call for stringent implementation of road traffic laws to prevent unwanted deaths and injuries due to road crashes.

In the Philippines, road traffic deaths remain a silent pandemic where 30 people die every day due to unnecessary road crashes.

As the country observes the National Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Survivors, and their Families, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), under the leadership of Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, remains firm in its commitment to strengthen road safety awareness and provide better and safer roads for all road users, especially the vulnerable ones. Road safety, being the top priority of the Department, will be continuously integrated in all programs and projects of the DOTr to ensure that no more lives are lost due to road safety negligence.

This observance, let's keep working together in the pursuit of justice for the victims of road crashes. Let's aim for a community where road crash incidents are not just lamented but prevented.

Road safety is everybody's business

Road crashes kill and injure similar numbers of Filipinos daily. In 2021, the number of fatalities from road crashes in the Philippines was recorded at 11,096 — this translates to an average of 30.4 persons killed daily on our roads, quite likely an underestimation. But is anyone taking notice? Shouldn't it be a Cabinet-level concern?

Road safety management is about giving road safety the high-level attention and priority that it deserves. It means declaring the rising number of injuries and fatalities as a public health emergency and applying a whole of government approach to solving the problem.

DOTr targets zero death caused by road accidents

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista is partnering with the World Health Organization (WHO), The Policy Center, other government agencies, private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and road users to prevent road crashes and injuries by escalating road safety education.

"The Department of Transportation takes road safety seriously. Our approach is anchored on prevention and education," Bautista said during the launch of the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan (PRSAP) 2023-2028 the other day.

The Philippine Road Safety Action Plan (PRSAP) 2023-2028 is a comprehensive document that will serve as a roadmap for road safety in the country.

The said department envisions a Philippine society with zero deaths on the road and a target of at least a 35 percent reduction in road traffic deaths by 2028.

November is the month of remembrance for road crash victims. The third Sunday of November is observed as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

In the Philippines, the third Sunday of November is also observed as the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims. The objective of the event is to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads, acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services, draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries and advocate for an appropriately serious response, advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families, and promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.
