TIMING BELT in oil systems (aka WET BELT or BELT IN OIL)

Wet belts systems are fully encased within the engine (belt submerged in engine oil). They were introduced to reduce the engine noise, improved efficiency and meet emissions targets. Unlike traditional timing belts, wet belts operate within the engine oil, which presents unique challenges and considerations for maintenance and replacement.

What can go wrong with a wet belt?

❇️ Oil impurities such as soot and other oil oxidation breakdown debris can get between the belt teeth and pulleys, weakening the belt
❇️ Wear on the outer belt coating exposes the underlying materials directly to the oil
❇️ The teeth can become detached, creating a smooth section on the belt. This causes the pulley to slip and changes the engine timing
❇️ Belt rubber fragments break off contaminating the engine oil, clogging the oil pump strainer, vacuum pump, and oil galleries resulting to oil starvation and engine failure.

How to detect issues with wet timing belts

Here’s a list of issues you might experience with a failing wet timing belt:

🔧 Oil leaks on timing cover(near wet belt area)
🔧 Check engine warning light illuminates
🔧 Audible noises such as squealing or grinding coming from the engine
🔧 Low oil pressure

Maintenance and Replacement

✅ Regular oil changes using manufacturer-approved oil grade/viscosity to ensure that the belts remain in good condition and help prevent premature failure.
✅ avoid running your engine with low engine oil levels.

Replacing wet belts is a complex and meticulous process that requires specialized tools and expertise. It requires much more time and effort to change compared to traditional timing belts.

While manufacturers typically provide recommended replacement intervals (100,000KMS) for wet belts, it is advisable to consider earlier replacement to mitigate the risk of belt failure and ensure continued engine performance and reliability.

SHOCK ABSORBER: Function, Importance, and Maintenance

Shock absorbers is an integral component of your vehicle's suspension system, ensuring a smooth and stable ride. Shock absorbers can absorb the energy generated by the movement of the vehicle's wheels and body while in motion. They function by regulating the movement of the springs and suspension, absorb road impact, maintain stability, thereby guaranteeing constant tire contact with the road.

Signs of Bad/Failing Shock absorbers:

❇️ Bumpy or bouncy ride
❇️ Fluid leaks
❇️ Uneven tire wear
❇️ Unstable feel/Vibration while driving
❇️ Unsual noise
❇️ "nose-diving" when braking

To prolong the lifespan of your shock absorbers, avoid overloading your vehicle, drive cautiously on rough terrains and when encountering obstacles or potholes, and perform regular maintenance checks to identify and address issues early. Keeping your vehicle’s suspension system well-maintained, including proper wheel alignment and balanced tires, also helps reduce unnecessary stress on shock absorbers.

KYB and ACDELCO shocks absorbers available at KOK Autsohop for most modern car makes and models.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (AT)
AT FLUID / AT FILTER: Do You Really Need To Change It?

Transmission fluid plays a crucial role in lubricating the components of your transmission and prevents wear and tear of the parts. As it circulates through the parts, it can pick up dirt and metal debris over time.

The automatic transmission filter is important because it traps debris and contaminants so that they do not enter the pump and gear system and get distributed throughout the transmission.

When the filter becomes dirty and obstructed, the pump will be starved of fluid, resulting in a low fluid pressure condition inside the transmission.

Some manufacturers, depending on your style of driving and the type of transmission your car has, recommend changing your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 70,000 kms. However, it’s important to note that this can vary depending on your car’s make and model. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your specific vehicle.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ATF FOR YOUR VEHICLE

These days there are a number of different types of ATF available, each formulated for specific types of transmissions. The most common types are Dexron/Mercon and Multi-Vehicle Synthetic. The transmission is one of the most complex systems in a vehicle, so it is critical to use an appropriate and high-quality ATF to help ensure superior performance, fuel economy and protection.

For more information on changing your car’s AT fluid and AT filter, visit or call KOK AUTOSHOP.

What Are Spark Plugs?
Spark plugs are an important part of your vehicle’s ignition system. They are responsible for creating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture within the engine’s cylinders, which in turn powers your vehicle.

When a spark plug goes bad, the engine's performance suffers and you'll notice an increase in fuel consumption.

Signs Your Car Needs a Spark Plug Replacement:

▶️ Engine RPMs fluctuate at idle (Rough idling)
▶️ Engine misfires or knocks during acceleration
▶️ Car accelerates slower (Decreased performance)
▶️ Poor gas mileage
▶️ Difficulty starting the car

If your vehicle shows signs that might need new spark plugs, Our team at KOK Autoshop is ready to help. As authorized seller of genuine Bosch parts, we carry spark plugs at very competitive prices.

What is ENGINE OIL SLUDGE?

Engine oil sludge is a thick, gelatinous, tar-like substance that forms when engine oil breaks down and clings to engine components. Sludge forms due to a combination of factors, including using poor quality oil, extended oil change intervals or lack of regular servicing, short distance trips, contaminants, and high temperatures.

Here's a detailed breakdown why sludge forms:
Using Low-Quality Engine Oil
- Low-quality and unsuitable oil can break down faster, increasing the likelihood of sludge formation
Infrequent Oil Changes
- Neglecting oil changes allows contaminants to accumulate in the oil
Contaminants
- Contaminants like unburned fuel, coolant, and combustion byproducts can degrade the oil and cause sludge
High Temperatures
- high engine temperatures accelerate the oil oxidation and breakdown
Short Distance Trips
- short journeys do not allow enough time for the engine to reach optimal operating temperatures

How to Prevent Oil Sludge

Maintaining your car regularly according to the automaker’s guidelines is the wisest course of action.
Regular oil changes with superior or high-quality oil, adhering to automaker-recommended maintenance schedules, and ensuring proper engine operation can significantly reduce the risk of sludge formation.

Schedule your next oil change at Kok Autoshop.
