⚙️ ENGINEER’S TECHNICAL CORNER # 03

Conveyor Capacity & Speed Calculation — PET Bottle TTC Conveyor

For a PET bottle Table-Top Chain (TTC) conveyor, speed and capacity must be matched with the required production rate and bottle spacing.

The basic relationship is:

Q=\frac{60 \times V \times 1000}{P}

Where:
Q = conveyor capacity, bottles/hour
V = conveyor speed, m/min
P = bottle pitch, mm

🔧 Practical Example

Given:

* Production requirement = 18,000 bottles/hour
* Bottle pitch = 150 mm

Required conveyor speed:

V=\frac{Q \times P}{60 \times 1000}

V=\frac{18,000\times150}{60,000}

\boxed{V=45\text{ m/min}}

This means a conveyor operating at approximately 45 m/min, with a 150 mm bottle pitch, can theoretically transport 18,000 bottles/hour.

However, actual conveyor design must also consider accumulation, bottle stability, guide rails, transfers, conveyor efficiency, machine interface, chain limitations, and operating conditions.

👉 Proper conveyor engineering is not simply about increasing speed—it is about achieving the required capacity while maintaining stable, reliable, and controlled bottle flow.

Automatic Lubrication & Cleaning — PET Bottle TTC Conveyor

In beverage production, TTC conveyors operate continuously and require proper lubrication and cleaning to maintain reliable and hygienic operation.

🔧 Automatic Lubrication helps control friction and wear, extending chain and sprocket life while reducing maintenance and downtime.

💧 Automatic Cleaning removes product residue and contaminants through properly designed spray systems, drainage, and controlled cleaning cycles.

Key design considerations include lubricant selection, dosing, nozzle arrangement, water flow and pressure, drainage, hygienic construction, controls, safety interlocks, and maintainability.

👉 Good conveyor design considers not only how bottles move, but also how the system operates, cleans, and maintains itself.

How to Calculate TTC Conveyor Speed

Continuing my technical series on PET Bottle Table-Top Chain Conveyors.

Conveyor speed is not simply a matter of making the bottles move faster. The correct speed depends on factors such as production rate, bottle spacing, conveyor layout, accumulation, transfers, and the machines connected to the line.

A simple calculation can help us understand the relationship between:

Production Rate → Bottle Pitch → Conveyor Speed

I’ll be sharing the basic formula and a practical example in this post.

💬 For engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel working with conveyors — how do you normally determine conveyor speed in your plant?

🔧 ENGINEER’S TECHNICAL CORNER #01

PET Bottle Table-Top Chain Conveyors — More Than Just Moving Bottles

In a beverage production line, a table-top chain conveyor may look simple, but proper engineering requires consideration of several interconnected factors:

⚙️ Conveyor speed — must match the production rate and bottle pitch.

🥤 Bottle stability — speed, guide rails, transfers and accumulation must be considered to prevent tipping and product jams.

🔗 Chain selection — straight-running or side-flexing chain, material, width, wear characteristics and operating environment all matter.

⚡ Drive system — motor, gearbox, sprocket, chain pull and starting conditions must be properly evaluated.

🔄 Accumulation — properly designed accumulation can help maintain production during short downstream equipment stoppages.

💧 Automatic lubrication — controlled lubrication can reduce friction and chain/sprocket wear while minimizing manual intervention.

🧼 Automatic cleaning — spray systems, drainage, cleaning solution, access and hygienic design should be considered together with the conveyor.

🏭 Line integration — the conveyor must work properly with the depalletizer, rinser, filler, capper, labeler, case packer and palletizer.

After 20 years working with Food & Beverage manufacturing systems, one lesson remains clear:

A conveyor should not simply move the product. It should support the entire production process — safely, reliably, hygienically and efficiently.

📐 My goal with this series is to share practical mechanical engineering knowledge from actual industrial applications and help engineers, technicians, contractors and plant personnel understand the engineering behind the equipment.

Engineering is not just about selecting equipment. It’s about making the entire system work.
