When analyzing microcrystals, spot size alone does not tell the full story. And the story here is a bit longer, but 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 – 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱!

Ellipsometry is extremely sensitive to changes in the optical properties and thickness. It averages all signals within its measurement spot. To measure small structures the spot is focused in conventional ellipsometry. When using a non-imaging method, it must be 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹. Uncovered substrate areas, edge effects, lateral inhomogeneities, and crystal orientation can all influence the result.

For this reason, reducing the discussion to lateral resolution alone is often insufficient for Van der Waals materials and similar microscale structures. A meaningful assessment must consider the entire measurement situation, not just the nominal spot diameter. Imaging ellipsometry provides this broader perspective and has therefore become a preferred method for characterizing the optical properties of Van der Waals materials, as demonstrated in numerous publications from leading research institutes including imaging Mueller Matrix ellipsometry. The EP4 Imaging Spectroscopic Ellipsometer provides the spatially resolved measurement capabilities to reliably determine the optical properties of Van der Waals materials, especially microcrystals.
