The Integrated Research and Training Center - Manufacturing and Energy Engineering Department (IRTC-MEED) partnered with the College of Engineering-Mechanical Engineering Department (COE-ME) and Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - TUP Student Unit (PSME-TUPSU) to hold the "Skills Development Training Program (Basic Machine Operation)" for 4th and 5th-year mechanical engineering students. The training aimed to provide a short course on benchwork, lathe machining, and welding to enhance students' skills and knowledge.
The program started on November 19, 2022, with an opening program hosted by the PSME-TUPSU officers. Prof. Carlos Zapanta gave the introductory remarks, followed by a motivational speech by Engr. Almira Darilag. After the program, students attended an orientation-seminar on basic machining and welding. Prof. Jose Delos Santos Jr. gave the first lecture on basic welding, while Prof. Rannie Quiambao delivered the second lecture on basic lathe machining operations.
The hands-on training on basic lathe machining operations was held on November 21, 2022, at the Manufacturing laboratory, 1/F IRTC Building. Students were divided into groups of 4-5 and attended morning and afternoon sessions. Each group completed a pencil holder as their final project, with Prof. Rannie Quiambao and Prof. Gonzalo Salvador Jr. supervising the activity. Daily attendance was recorded, and a total of 118 students completed the program as of March 2023.
Meanwhile, the hands-on training program on basic welding was held at the welding laboratory,2/F IRTC building in January 2023. Under the guidance of Prof. Gonzalo Salvador Jr. and Mr. Andres Maglaqui, students attended morning and afternoon sessions in groups of 4-5. Daily attendance was monitored, and as of March 2023, 158 students successfully completed the training.
Overall, the "Skills Development Training Program" was a success in enhancing students' skills and knowledge in benchwork, lathe machining, and welding.
