THE REAL FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT: JARO FLOODWAY IN ILOILO CITY
While Cebu and other provinces suffered flooding after Typhoon Tino — despite billions poured into “flood control” — Iloilo City remained safe.
Why?
The Jaro Floodway.
Not a ribbon, not a billboard.
A real, engineered, functioning flood diversion system.
Construction began in 2007 and was completed in 2011.
It is approximately 4.8 kilometers long, with a riverbed width of 52 meters, a top width of 82 meters, and was designed to handle a 20-year return period flood.
The Jaro River drains upland flow — mainly from the Tigum River system — which brings huge volume from the elevated interior of Iloilo.
When Tigum swells… Jaro swells.
And THAT is exactly why the Floodway matters.
It continues to prove its value today:
• excess water from Jaro River is diverted straight to the sea
• low-lying barangays are spared from overflow
• river channels are kept from bursting at peak volume
Result: zero catastrophic flooding in a city that used to be among the most flood-prone in Western Visayas.
Now the Jaro Floodway is going viral — because people saw with their own eyes:
Flood control is not about budgets… it’s about results.
