BMW Z4 in the shop with fuel system work, fabrication, and exhaust related services.

Fuel pump replacement was carried out together with a new gasket, then connectors and high pressure hose installation. A weak or failing fuel pump can lead to hard starting, hesitation under load, unstable idling, or sudden loss of power once fuel delivery becomes inconsistent.

Exhaust work followed with removal of the existing muffler, fabrication of the original mounting bracket, and installation of a stock muffler. Work underneath the car usually involve checking clearances, mounting points, and fitment, making sure the exhaust sits correctly because we don't want unwanted vibration or contact during operation. One more Z4 passing through the shop with a mix of mechanical repair, fabrication, and restoration related work.

This week at Bimmer Monkeys, we continue focusing on BMW E46s covering both engine management and chassis development.

On an E46 318i equipped with an N42 engine, a fault in the Valvetronic system involving the Valvetronic motor and control module resulted in improper eccentric shaft control, leading to unstable idle, and poor throttle response. To rectify the issue, the motor and control module were replaced, followed by a full system re-scan and reset of all adaptations. This ensured correct eccentric shaft positioning and restored proper Valvetronic lift calibration.

Then on the shop’s E46 race car, a fresh set of Riaction Coilovers was installed as part of its latest suspension setup update. Of course, this setup provides improved handling consistency and tighter response during aggressive driving conditions, especially under load and cornering transitions.

A solid round of E46 work, keeping both daily-driven and race-focused builds performing at their intended level.

Mercedes-Benz SL500 R129 AMG right from Palawan brought in to Bimmer Monkeys for troubleshooting and electrical repair work!

Aircon electrical issues were also addressed, including repair of a damaged wiring and restoring the affected section back to its original configuration. Sharing one of the diesel jobs that recently went through at Bimmer Monkeys: Audi Q7 in for diesel engine related maintenance and cleaning.

Service included pulling out the injectors to access and replace the valve cover gasket, along with intake pull down for EGR cleaning. Engine lower oil pan sealing was also attended to, followed by engine oil change. A DPF reset was likewise carried out as part of the job to complete the service.

Diesel work tends to become more involved once buildup starts affecting airflow, oil leaks begin showing around sealing areas, and multiple systems have to be opened up at the same time. On SUVs like the Q7, even access alone already adds to the scope of the repair, especially around the intake and upper engine section.

A peek inside the shop with a BMW E46 318i M43 that went through heavy engine maintenance. This one is not just the usual PMS, with the engine opened up for resealing, overhaul work, and replacement of several wear related parts.

Scope covered the timing side, valve cover area, oil pan section, crankshaft seals, oil filter housing, dipstick seals, and other common leak points around the M43. Timing case gaskets, C gasket, chain tensioner, valve seals, cylinder head gasket, oil pan gasket, and related seals were replaced as part of the job. Piston ring kit and connecting rod bearings were also included in the work, which makes the service more involved than a regular reseal. Transmission side was also attended to with front transmission oil seal and selector shaft seal replacement. Cooling side was attended to as well with the water pump, pulley, thermostat related parts, and coolant service included in the process.

During this kind of service, a big part of the job happens after the engine is already opened: cleaning sealing surfaces, checking removed parts, preparing new seals, then making sure reassembly is done in the correct order. Heavy engine maintenance is not just about replacing parts, since the condition found inside also guides what needs to be addressed next.

Underchassis work performed on this BMW E30 316i focusing on the driveline assembly. The exhaust and propeller shaft were pulled down to access the affected section, followed by replacement of the flex disc.

Getting back into the lineup with a BMW F32 428i taken in at Bimmer Monkeys for engine work covering retiming and valve seal related concerns. This required opening up the timing side with replacement of the timing chain, guide rails, tensioner, and supporting seals across the front end.

Additional components including valve cover gasket, vacuum pump seal, crankshaft oil seal, intake tube, and drive belt were also replaced during the process. Cooling system was addressed alongside with a new thermostat installed and coolant replaced.

Retiming work on this engine calls for precise camshaft and crankshaft positioning, with locking tools used to keep everything correctly aligned during assembly. Even small deviations can affect timing correlation, idle quality, and overall engine behavior. Components were laid out, fitted, and torqued in sequence before bringing the engine back together. Once completed, the F32 went through final thorough checks.
