Combination vs. Multi-Sensor—what’s the real difference? 🤔🔥

When specifying devices for an FDAS, "Multiple Sensors in one unit" can mean two very different things under NFPA 72.

​1. The Combination Detector (NFPA 72 - 3.3.79.6):

Think of this as an "OR" function device. It uses multiple sensing methods (like Ionization and Photoelectric) to broaden the range of fires it can detect.

​Key Characteristic: Each sensing method inside the device operates independently.
​
​2. The Multi-Sensor Detector (NFPA 72 - 3.3.79.16):

This device is designed for efficiency in varied hazard areas.

​Key Characteristic: While it also contains multiple sensors (smoke, heat, gas), it is capable of generating multiple alarm signals that are analyzed to determine if an alarm is truly warranted.

Ever wondered if you really need smoke detectors below those beautiful open grid ceilings? 🤔🔥

When designing FDAS, we always want to avoid untidy or improper installations that clash with the architectural aesthetic. But life safety and code compliance must always come first!

The good news? You don't always have to clutter the visible ceiling. Under NFPA 72 (Section 17.5.3.1.3), smoke detectors are NOT required below open grid ceilings IF your ceiling meets these 3 exact conditions:

✅ 1. Openings of the grid are 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) or larger in the least dimension.
✅ 2. The thickness of the ceiling material does not exceed that least dimension.
✅ 3. The openings make up at least 70% of the total ceiling area.

⚠️ THE CATCH: If the ceiling design fails to meet even ONE of these three requirements, smoke detectors MUST be installed below the open grid ceiling to guarantee proper detection.

⚠️The WHY behind the code: If the ceiling checks all three boxes, the smoke can freely pass through the grid openings to a detector installed above the open grid ceiling. If it doesn't meet the criteria, the grid acts as a barrier to the smoke, making detectors below mandatory.

Always verify the actual dimensions on site, but knowing this provision can help you navigate discussions with clients and keep your layouts looking incredibly clean—without ever compromising safety.
