What is Plate Load Test and why is it necessary when building a house?

A Plate Load Test (PLT) is a field test used to determine the soil's ultimate bearing capacity and its probable settlement under a specific load.

While a one or two-story building might rely on "assumed" soil strength, a three-story building places a much heavier load on the ground. Without this test, you risks:

1. Foundation failure.
2. Overspending. You may use more concrete/steel than necessary because the actual strength is unknown.
3. Permit issues.

Note: While PLT is an effective method and considered a budget-friendly safety check, its application is generally limited to buildings up to three stories. For talller structures, engineers require more advanced soil investigations, such as borehole drilling, to ensure deeper ground layers can safely support the additional load.
