Work to Please God, Not People

“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,” - Colossians‬ ‭3:23‬

The Apostle Paul teaches that we are to work as though we are "working for the Lord and not for people." He's saying that no job is too small, no job is too menial, and no job is too insignificant when you have the right motive and perspective.

We should think, "I'm doing it for God; I'm doing this work as if I'm doing it for the Lord.“

Now, how do I know if I'm doing my work for the Lord? Two characteristics will show up in your attitude:

Excellence - If I'm doing my work for the Lord, and not just for the boss, then I'll do it with excellence. That means I will do the best I can because I'm not doing it for anyone's approval except God's.

Enthusiasm - And, I do my work with enthusiasm. I work for God; therefore, I do it with a cheerful attitude. "Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically." (Romans 12:11)

When you work with all your heart, motivated by the love of Christ, your work will be transformed into an act of worship for God.

Let Love Motivate Your Work

The Apostle Paul says, "Do all your work in love."

He doesn't say some of your work, but all of your work. He also says no matter "what I do, I'm nothing without love." (1 Corinthians 13:3)

The point is, any job can be turned into worship when it is built on the model of Christ's love; that love is expressed to co-workers, clients and customers. "It's not what you do so much that matters, but how much love you put into it." Think about it like this -- Two-thirds of the word "career' is C-A-R-E.

So, I want you to pray a prayer every day. When you get up to go to work, whether it's at home or at school, in your backyard or at an office or wherever you work. I want you to pray, "Father, today I want to worship you through my work. I want to express my gifts. I want to do it as if I'm doing it for You and I want to do it in love."

"So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer." (Romans 12:1)

Do everything in love. - 1 Corinthians 13:3

Now that companies are barely surviving because of the pandemic, it really is time to do what HR managers have always asked you to do:
WORK LIKE YOU OWN THE COMPANY.

Help it survive. Give it priority. Don’t count your hours. Don’t feel shortchanged even if your salary does not match the hours you put in.

Take care of it like it has taken care of you. Give back.

If you still have a job, count yourself lucky, and give back.

It’s not easy for business owners to sustain operations now, and the only thing holding them back from shutting down is their concern for you, the workers. It would be easy for business owners now to cut their losses, to stop the bleeding, but many strive to keep going because they know many families depend on them. So they will take it for as long as they could, because believe it or not, your company cares for its workers.

So please, this is not the time to complain and insist on your work-life balance, and working only strictly during office hours time. Walang work-life balance ngayon. Walang balance ngayon. So many would willingly give up work life balance just to have the privilege to work.

So work like you own the company. When you save the company, you save yourself and your colleagues.
