Why does a "luxury" unit often come with zero privacy?

You invested in a premium residence in BGC or Makati for the lifestyle and the view, yet you can hear your neighbor’s television as if it were in your own living room.

In the Philippine real estate market, many high-rise developments prioritize aesthetic finishes over Acoustic Privacy. Noise doesn't just travel through walls; it 'leaks' through flanking paths; shared ventilation, back-to-back electrical outlets, and thin floor slabs.

Acoustic comfort is not a luxury; it is a fundamental requirement for mental well-being and privacy. Better sleep and a quieter home start with engineering-led sound insulation.

🎧 Why Acoustics Should Be Considered in the Design Phase

Acoustics is often treated as an afterthought, but by then, it becomes far more difficult and expensive to fix.

Integrating acoustics early in the design phase allows potential issues to be addressed before construction even begins, saving time, avoiding rework, and ensuring the space performs as intended.

⚖️ The Reality:
A simple acoustic assessment during the design stage is a small and controlled effort.

But ignoring it?
Fixing acoustic issues after construction can cost 4 to 6 times more due to rework, additional materials, and modifications to walls, ceilings, and partitions.

What could have been addressed early becomes a complex and costly problem later.

When acoustics is part of the design process:
✔️ You avoid unnecessary rework and delays
✔️ You achieve better sound isolation and clarity
✔️ You enhance comfort and user experience
✔️ You get it right the first time

At Cicada Acoustics, we believe smart design doesn’t just look good, it sounds right from the very beginning. 🎶

For architects and designers, specifying high performance operable walls, doors, windows, and partitions is often part of delivering a well designed space.

However, manufacturer stated acoustic ratings are based on ideal laboratory conditions, and in real projects achieving that same performance is not always guaranteed.

Flanking paths through walls, ceilings, and floors, poor detailing, gaps and air leakage, inadequate seals, MEP penetrations, and installation quality can all significantly reduce actual performance. The risk is that a well intended design, supported by premium products, may still fall short acoustically, leading to compromised user experience and underutilized investment.

This is where acoustic input becomes critical.

At Cicada Acoustics, we work alongside architects and designers across the design phase, construction phase, and post completion. We help translate acoustic requirements into practical and buildable details, flag coordination risks early, support the team during construction, and verify performance through on site measurements.

Because achieving the right acoustic outcome is not just about what you specify, it is about how the design is developed, executed, and validated.

Many spaces look great but fail the moment you hear them.

This is where an acoustic consultant becomes essential.

Architects and designers shape how a space looks and feels, but acoustics defines how it actually functions. Poor sound environments can lead to echo, noise complaints, lack of speech clarity, and ultimately a space that does not serve its purpose whether it is an office, restaurant, or meeting room.

An acoustic consultant works alongside the design team to
• Control reverberation and echo
• Improve speech intelligibility
• Manage noise between spaces
• Ensure compliance with acoustic standards
• Integrate acoustic solutions without compromising design intent
• Integrate solutions early that reduce overall cost by avoiding overdesign and costly rework

The earlier acoustics is considered in the design process, the more efficient and cost effective the outcome becomes. Fixing sound issues after construction is always more expensive and often more limiting.

Good design is not only seen. It is heard.

The right operable wall doesn’t just divide space, it blocks noise effectively Too!

Operable walls (movable partitions) are widely used in offices, training centers, and conference halls to create flexible spaces. But did you know that their acoustic performance is just as important as their flexibility?

Here’s what you need to know:

1️⃣ Acoustic Ratings Are Key
Every wall has a sound insulation rating, often expressed as STC (Sound Transmission Class) or Rw.
The rating tells you how much sound the wall can block. The higher the rating, the better the privacy.

2️⃣ Seals Make All the Difference
Even the highest-rated wall won’t perform well without proper perimeter seals, drop seals, and junction treatments.
Gaps around the floor, ceiling, or edges create flanking paths that let sound bypass the wall entirely.

3️⃣ Material & Construction Matter
Solid cores, multi-layer panels, and tight-fitting tracks reduce sound leakage.
Weak materials or improper installation can reduce effectiveness by half or more.

4️⃣ Plan Acoustics Early
Designing for acoustics after construction is costly and often impossible.
Early integration ensures the wall type, layout, sealing systems, and junction details are coordinated with ceilings, floors, and mechanical systems.

Takeaway:
A well-designed operable wall isn’t just about creating flexible spaces, it’s about controlling noise, ensuring speech privacy, and making spaces functional.

Why "Acoustic" in the Name Isn’t Enough

Architects and designers have all been there: you see "Acoustic" in a product name and think, “Great, that’s the sound issues sorted.” But here’s the truth: Acoustics is a science, not a marketing label. Just like you wouldn’t buy a smartphone based solely on the word "Phone" without checking the RAM or battery life, you shouldn't specify an acoustic product without diving into its performance metrics.

"Acoustic" products generally fall into three distinct categories. Using the wrong one is like trying to fix a leak with tape:

Absorption: How well does it "soak up" sound (NRC ratings) across low, mid, and high frequencies?
Isolation: Does it actually block sound from traveling between rooms (STC/Rw ratings)?
Diffusion: Does it scatter sound waves to create a "live" but balanced environment?

💡 The Bottom Line for Professionals
Specifying based on performance data rather than product names allows you to:

Reduce Quantity: Use fewer panels by placing higher-performing materials strategically.
Lower Costs: Avoid over-specifying or buying "placebo" products that don't solve the specific frequency issue.
Seamless Integration: High performance doesn't have to mean ugly. When you know the specs, you can integrate acoustics into the design concept rather than "patching" it later.

A brand name isn't a guarantee of effectiveness, it's the integration and data that matter.

Ever sat at the back of a classroom and barely understood what the teacher was saying?

In many schools across the Philippines, acoustics is often overlooked during design. Classrooms are built with hard concrete walls, tiled floors, concrete ceilings, full glass windows, and noisy fans. The result?

• Students struggle to hear the teacher clearly
• Outside noise easily enters the room
• Voices echo and overlap
• Teachers strain their voices every single day

And then we wonder why students lose focus.

When a classroom has excessive reverberation and noise, words blur together. Younger students and those seated at the back are affected the most. Over time, this impacts comprehension, attention, and academic performance.

Good classroom acoustics isn’t a luxury. It’s a fundamental part of an effective learning environment. If we want better education outcomes, we must start designing schools that sound as good as they look.

At Cicada Acoustics, we provide professional consultation to assess classroom conditions, identify acoustic issues, and design practical treatment solutions that improve speech clarity, reduce noise intrusion, and create a better learning environment.

❓ What happens if you don’t consult an acoustic specialist before designing hotel partitions?

You’ll hear about it later. Literally.

Noise in a hotel room is more than a nuisance. Guests hear:
• Conversations next door
• TVs through the wall
• Corridor noise at midnight

Once complaints start, fixing it after construction is far more costly than getting it right from the start.

At Cicada Acoustics, we help design partition systems that achieve real noise isolation. Our solutions go beyond walls that simply look good on drawings, they are engineered to perform, ensuring guest comfort and privacy from day one.

Good acoustic design saves money. Poor acoustics can damage your reputation.

Plan early, design smart, and protect your investment.

Blackout curtains are NOT soundproofing.

We often see clients install thick blackout curtains hoping to block noise from outside; traffic, neighbors, karaoke, or street noise.

Unfortunately, the result is usually:
❌ Noise still coming in
❌ Very little improvement in sound isolation
❌ False expectation of “soundproofing”
❌ Wasted budget

Blackout curtains are designed to block light, NOT SOUND.

While they may slightly reduce high-frequency reflections inside the room, they do not provide proper sound isolation. Effective sound insulation requires:
✔ Proper wall or glazing systems
✔ Sufficient mass
✔ Airtight sealing
✔ Decoupling strategies

Sound isolation is a construction issue, not just a surface treatment solution.

At Cicada Acoustics, we design effective acoustic treatments and proper sound insulation systems based on engineering principles and real measurements.

Before spending on temporary fixes, talk to an acoustic consultant.
