Another great Wellington project to be involved in.
From today you'll start to see more work happening at Melling as we start building the new interchange.
We have some site preparation to do before we can start building the new interchange on State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt. At the moment this won't affect how you travel, but there will be some changes later in the year – we'll share information about this ahead of time so you know what to expect.
This month workers will start building a haul road alongside the state highway (which’ll be used to transfer material to and from the worksite). Because this'll close part of the river trail, we'll be building a temporary walking and cycling path on the other side of the river.
We’ll also be relocating underground services and setting up prefabricated buildings at our sites. You'll also start to see increased activity in the areas around Pharazyn St, Block Rd, Rutherford St, Queens Drive, and the riverbank areas north of Melling Bridge.
Today workers are doing more ground monitoring – in this photo you can see investigations on the ground where we'll build the interchange.
The new interchange will make travel on SH2 more efficient and safer. We're building a new bridge over Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River to connect to the Lower Hutt city centre, relocating the Melling train station and its park and ride facilities, and building new and improved walking and cycling paths.
This is a Road of Regional Significance project which makes up a significant portion of a wider programme called Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi, providing a safer and more resilient and accessible transport system in Lower Hutt.
