Napier Boys’ High School’s Armour Block replacement continues to stand as an example of future focused educational design, shaped by climate, movement, and the life of the school.

Designed as two connected buildings framing the Quad, the project replaces an end of life facility with adaptable Science and English learning spaces, shaded outdoor circulation, and a strong field facing identity defined by its DNA-inspired brise soleil.

Shortlisted for the 2025 NZIA Gisborne and Hawkes Bay Architecture Awards, the project reflects a considered approach to longevity, flexibility, and student wellbeing.

This morning, our Wellington studio came together bright and early to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, sharing a delicious breakfast while raising awareness of breast cancer and supporting Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand.

It was a great way to pause, connect as a team, and show our support for an important cause that affects so many in our communities. Thank you to everyone who contributed, attended, and helped make the morning such a positive and meaningful start to the day.

We were proud to sponsor the recent Property Council visit to Turnbull House and to share insights into a project where engineering is very deliberately in service of the building itself.

S&T delivered the full MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) and lift design for Turnbull House, working within significant constraints including up to 425mm of seismic movement, complex heritage considerations, and the need for ongoing access to maintain critical equipment. Through careful coordination, our team developed an integrated services design that supports the building’s current use while enabling its future adaptability.

As Project Lead Tim Keightley notes, “Turnbull is not just a building upgrade – the building is what we’re trying to protect. Everything we do has to serve the building, not the other way around.”

The tour offered a valuable behind‑the‑scenes look at how thoughtful engineering, seismic resilience and heritage conservation can work together to safeguard one of Wellington’s most significant historic buildings.

Graduate Spotlight: Augustina Binyamin ✨

For her thesis year, Augustina stepped away from the screen, working by hand through drawing, modelling, and making to explore craftsmanship and material understanding in architecture.

Growing up in Wellington shaped how she sees space: a characterful, layered city where the built environment sits closely alongside beach and bush, reminding us that architecture should enrich people’s lives, not just serve a function.

She’s drawn to:
🏠 Houses - intimate spaces that shape everyday routines and relationships
🏛 Civic buildings - where scale and constraint can push strong ideas further

Recently, we were honoured to attend the blessing of the newly expanded receiving office alongside Arohata Prison staff, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and the wider project team.

The upgrades support the installation of a new body scanner, improving safety for both staff and prisoners, and include refurbished receiving and processing areas, staff facilities, laundry, secure cells, a wellbeing room and new storage and kitchen spaces.

A great team effort and an important step forward, thank you to everyone involved.

A connected campus for future ready learning 📚

After seven long years, the Wairarapa College redevelopment finally comes to a close, bringing together new hospitality and learning facilities, inclusive spaces, and the careful restoration of a much loved heritage building.

Designed in close collaboration with the school and the Ministry of Education, the project supports diverse learning needs while celebrating place, community, and history.

This week, we were lucky enough to host a New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) hands-on workshop at our Wellington studio, spending the day with architects and designers exploring the thermal modelling of residential buildings, in line with recent changes to the NZ Building Code.

Using the NZGBC ECCHO calculator, we looked at how early design decisions and high-performance glazing such as AGP Architectural Glass Products Solux Ultra, can significantly improve thermal comfort and building performance.

A great day of learning, collaboration, and shared insight.

Wainuiomata High School has won the Education category at the Resene Colour Awards 🎉

Inspired by the natural flora of the surrounding Wainuiomata hills, the colour palette reflects rich greens, warm oranges and vibrant yellows found in the local landscape. Green Trespa cladding grounds the exterior in its setting, while interior accents of Resene Celebrate, Ecstasy, Palm Green, Highland and Avocado bring warmth and energy to learning spaces.

The result is a campus that feels like an organic extension of its environment, a key reason the project was recognised by the judges.

Huge thank you to our partners, we are proud to have been part of this journey 💛
