MB Century Ltd is deeply saddened to share the passing of Henry Levao, a long-standing and much-respected member of New Zealand’s geothermal community.
Henry began his career in 1977 with the Ministry of Works (now MB Century) and over the decades worked across every geothermal field in Aotearoa, contributing to some of the most important reservoir data ever collected.
Henry was known for his calm presence, steady hands, and generous way of teaching. Many reservoir engineers, technicians, and Geothermal Institute students will remember him for his iconic “How to do downhole surveys” demonstrations during annual field trips to Wairakei.
Henry’s expertise extended well beyond New Zealand. His skills in winch operation and downhole logging took him to Indonesia (2006) and the Philippines (2008), where he helped international teams navigate the “special needs” of running geothermal tools safely and successfully.
Across nearly four decades, Henry made a lasting contribution to how geothermal wells are understood, monitored, and managed. The data he collected, and the many people he trained, continue to shape New Zealand’s geothermal capability today.
To Henry’s whānau, friends, and all who worked alongside him throughout his remarkable career, our thoughts and aroha are with you.
Many in the industry, both here and overseas, will hold special memories of him.
Henry’s legacy will forever remain part of MB Century’s story and part of Aotearoa’s geothermal story ❤️
