As the Queen of Country said, we’re still working 9-5* as we prepare to open our new Timaru premises. Our team have started to move some of our Hampidjan Magnet netting to the new site, and customers and visitors will be greeted by our showstopper of a reception desk that’s also made the move.

Made from refurbished trawl doors and reclaimed Kauri wood found locally, the desk is a nod to our company’s heritage, and the sustainability which we carry with us as we move forwards.

*Hampidjan Timaru’s opening hours are 7:30-4:30 but it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well.

This week the new site of our Timaru branch was a hive of activity. Outside we had earth moving and landscaping taking shape, while inside the paint is going on, windows going in, and carpet going down.

At the rear of our site will be a dedicated wire splicing and rigging room, which you can see the framing for in the video. This area will also have a straight 100m ‘corridor’ down the perimeter of our site, allowing our expert riggers to take on even bigger jobs.

Last month’s heavy rain brought severe flooding to much of the Canterbury region, and Kiwood — the sustainable forestry and timber company based in Kaikoura — watched the Wharekiri ford take the full force of it. Thousands of tonnes of material moved through, including rocks bigger than a Land Cruiser!

The day after it settled, Kiwood used their Hampidjan tow chain to help another vehicle haul a trailer loaded with sawn timber back across the partially repaired ford — gear that’s been part of their setup on every ute and tractor for exactly this kind of moment.

Thanks to Ralph and Edwin at Kiwood for sharing the footage. We’re always glad to help you out of a tight (or flooded!) spot.

This week’s build update takes us on a tour of the new showroom and office space, as well as a quick look at how the warehouse is shaping up!

Our new showroom will give customers a dedicated space to explore our range, meet the team, and find solutions for their projects.

With the gib now up, next on the to-do list is painting and flooring.

Check back next week for an update on our new wire splicing and rigging room!

Take a peek inside our new Timaru premises, soon to be completed!

Our new net loft and manufacturing area spans over 3000m², giving us more space to assemble, repair and handle larger projects while improving workflow across the team.

One feature we’re especially excited about is our dedicated splicing room. It’s where our experienced team will splice everything from DynIce strops through to mooring ropes and pilot ladders.

And if you’re visiting us, you’ll be able to see the team in action through a viewing window into the splicing room—a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship that goes into every splice.

We’re looking forward to sharing more progress as we get closer to the move!

Progress is moving quickly on our new Timaru facility based in Washdyke, with the gib now going up and the windows being installed. Every week it’s looking more like the home of the next chapter for Hampidjan NZ.

As we get closer to relocating, we’re looking forward to bringing our expanding manufacturing, product range, and customer support together in a purpose-built facility designed for the future.

There’s still plenty of work to do before we’re ready to make the move, but it’s exciting to see the vision becoming reality!

Watch this space for more updates as we get closer to opening our new doors in the next few months.

Welcome Takapō!

Last year we shared our excitement as the F.V. Takapō was launched. Today, she berthed in Timaru for the first time.

It’s been exciting to follow her journey from the shipyard to New Zealand waters, and we’re proud to have played a part in getting her ready for operation.

Congratulations to the team at Aurora Fisheries on reaching this milestone. We look forward to seeing the F.V. Takapō out on the water and wish her crew many safe and successful seasons ahead!

It’s hip to be square (mesh!)

Wayne is selvedging a square mesh codend, a mesh orientation we’re seeing more and more vessels choose.

In a traditional diamond mesh codend, the meshes run parallel with the length of the net. As the codend fills, the meshes pull tight and close up, making it harder for smaller fish and bycatch to escape.

A square mesh codend works differently. Like a T90 mesh orientation (where the meshes are turned 90°), the meshes remain more open under tension, giving juvenile fish and non-target species a better chance to escape.

The result is reduced bycatch, improved selectivity, and a simple way to help support the long-term sustainability of our fisheries.
