Most of the time rust is the enemy, but weathering steel (often called Corten) is made to rust. As it weathers, the surface forms a tight, stable patina that slows further corrosion, so it can sit outside unpainted and hold that deep orange-brown look.

It’s a go-to for garden edging, planter boxes and sculptures. People love the rustic look and low maintenance.

Got an outdoor project in mind? It's worth knowing: the protective layer needs regular wet/dry cycles to form. Near the coast, or anywhere it stays constantly damp (buried in soil, under wet leaves, sitting in water), it can keep corroding instead of stabilising. Early run-off can also stain concrete and paving.

This part started as a large flat sheet, making it an awkward job for the press brake.

Each fold is usually lined up by pushing the sheet against back stops at the rear of the machine, but on a part this big and flimsy that can be problematic. Instead, we etched fold lines onto the sheet so our folder could see exactly where each fold goes and line it up by eye. The finished parts show how well that works, with two cleanly formed transition pieces.

Ready for a productive spring? So are we.

Our new LVD Easyform 9 170/30 press brake arrived from Belgium in July, folding up to 3m with laser angle measurement for accurate bends first time, every time. That's straight-up extra folding capacity on top of what we already had.

Add laser, tube laser, plasma, gas and waterjet cutting, plus flatbed lasers running around the clock, and your job goes from file to finished part without leaving the building.

Rock beats scissors, but no one mentioned water beats rock!

Our client wanted a clean rectangle cut out of this piece of rock, and our waterjet stepped up to the challenge.

Stone doesn't give in easily, so the cut took the best part of half an hour, but we've spared you the boring bits.

Manson Engineering won our recent BBQ giveaway, so as promised, we got in touch with Team Bbqwar and headed out to site to feed the crew.

The bbq was fired up around lunchtime, with meats cooked low and slow over a few hours ready for a feast for the whole team that afternoon. A few of the OSCS boys headed out to join them (plate in hand!).

A big thanks to Manson Engineering for having us – great crew, good yarns, and not a lot left on the trays by the end of it.

Our fibre lasers focus all their power into a spot narrower than a human hair.

At that scale the numbers get crazy – several million watts per square millimetre. That's tens of thousands of times more intense than the surface of the sun 🤯

Nothing survives underneath it. Metal vaporises or melts on contact, with pinpoint accuracy down to the micron.

That's the difference between a part that nearly fits and a part that just fits.

Did you know "laser" is actually an acronym? Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

This was the next iteration in technology after the “maser” (same idea, just microwaves instead of light).

Even though microwaves sound gruntier, the light used for lasers is the reason they can be focussed into a tight, intense beam making them able to cut through metal with ease.

Check out our Trumpf laser in action – that green tint is the safety glass which adds light protection in addition to shielding operators from sparks and molten metal spatter.
