Please please please oppose this bill!

Submission window extended to the 6th of May.

After One Ocean, Legasea, NZSFC and NZUWA wrote a letter of complaint regarding the short time to write submissions the Govt decided to extend the date to allow for extra time.

So you have 2 more days to use your “Noisy voices” to make a submission.

This is already sitting at 30,000 submissions, which makes this the 4th most in the history of NZ. Not bad for “just some fish”

It would’ve great to get this to 50,000!

Have you done your submission for the fisheries amendment bill? Needs to be done by 28th, 5 days!

It's very important we push back, else our fisheries will never be the same moving forwards.

If this is allowed to become law;
🐠Allows higher quota to commercial fisheries, decimating the fish stocks.

🐠Allows for fast tracking of further law changes with only 20 working days for submissions and public consultation.

🐠Allows more dumping of bycatch.

🐠Allows more species to be targeted, including gamefish and reef fish.

🐠Allows less oversight of commercial vessels to the public by limiting who can watch their cameras.

🐠Allows destructive unsustainable fishing methods.

The list goes on, this is just absolutely terribly bad!

Hey Fishos,

Can you please make sure your submissions are done by Friday? It's incredibly important we don't allow commerical fishing to pillage and decimate stocks of game and reef fish.

TLDR;
They did this before and ended up with swordfish becoming another fish that could be intentionally caught & sold for profit. Don't allow marlin and reef fish to have the same fate! Oppose the proposed law changes!

The long winded answer & my personal recommendation;
Their argument is to keep these fish when caught accidentally (as bycatch) and brought onboard dead and unable to be returned alive to the ocean.

My suggestion is simple, if they are caught this way and they don't want to waste the resource; Then it just be donated to locals, iwi, Marae or anyone that requests it for non commercial purposes.

There should be no monetary incentive attached to these species, or they will end up becoming part of the quota system for swordfish when they proposed the same change in the past.
