A regulatory change that flew under the radar is causing serious concern across the NZ electrical industry.

The Electricity (Safety) Amendment Regulations 2025 removed the prohibition on switches or fuses being installed in PEN conductors. The New Zealand Electrical Inspectors Association says this creates a genuine risk of lethal voltage reaching earthed equipment β€” and is urging electricians to exercise extreme caution.

WorkSafe, NZEIA, Master Electricians NZ, and Engineering NZ are in ongoing discussions about the implications.

If you're working on installations where this could be relevant, the full technical breakdown is in the May issue of Marketplace Magazine.

The electrical trade employs over 156,000 people and contributes more than $30 billion to New Zealand's GDP.

It's also being trained like it's 1995.

EV charging. Solar and battery storage. Smart buildings. AI-enabled energy systems. These aren't futuristic concepts anymore β€” they're being installed in homes and businesses right now. And the people doing that work are still qualifying at Level 4.

Master Electricians NZ have published a sharp piece in Marketplace Magazine on why that disconnect is becoming a national risk, and what needs to change.

Good read for anyone in the trade.

Here's something worth sharing with your team this week. πŸ‘‡

A recent article in Marketplace Magazine (tips from WorkingWise) reminded us of something important β€” fatigue in the workplace is far more serious than most people realise. In fact, research shows it can impair your ability to work safely to the same level as excessive alcohol consumption.

For anyone in the trades, that's a big deal.

Whether it's long hours, night shifts, heat on a job site, or just not enough sleep β€” fatigue creeps up, and the warning signs are easy to miss.

Some things to look out for:
πŸ”΄ Struggling to concentrate or remember things
πŸ”΄ Slower than usual reactions
πŸ”΄ Mood changes or withdrawing from the team
πŸ”΄ Making more errors than normal

The best thing you can do? Talk about it. A workplace where people can say "I'm not okay today" is a safer workplace for everyone.

Share this with someone who might need the reminder. πŸ’™

Happy 10th Advance-versary, Craig! πŸŽ‰

Ten years ago, Craig joined our Kapiti branch as Purchasing Manager β€” and our Kapiti operation hasn't missed a beat since.

Craig is the reason when YOU walk in needing a cable, conduit, or connector, it's there waiting for you. He quietly keeps our whole show on the road (the unglamorous stuff, as we like to call it), and honestly? He's largely the reason we look good.

Outside of work, Craig is a massive Rugby League fan and the Warriors' most loyal supporter. We're pretty sure he bleeds black and white. It IS the Warriors, right Craig? πŸ˜„

Looking great there buddy. Here's to 10 incredible years β€” we couldn't do Kapiti without you!

We are proud to have supported the Red Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club New Zealand 5 at their 6th annual Te Omanga Hospice Charity Ride this month!

Despite some dodgy weather, the riders showed up and showed out β€” and together, an incredible $3,626 was raised. Every dollar goes directly to supporting hospice patients and families in our community.

The Red Knights are a group of active and retired firefighters doing amazing mahi in the Hutt Valley. We're stoked to play a small part in making it happen.

Huge aroha to everyone who rode, donated, and contributed spot prizes. And to the team at Te Omanga Hospice β€” the work you do is invaluable. 🧑

We are so incredibly proud of our very own Rose! πŸŽ“

After dedicating years of her own time to study, Rose has officially completed her Graduate Certificate in Lighting through Massey University β€” and we couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate this achievement with her!

This is no small feat. Balancing work and study takes real dedication and commitment, and Rose has shown both in spades. Advance Electrical Wholesalers was proud to support Rose on this journey, and seeing her reach this milestone is a reminder of why investing in our people matters so much to us.

Rose, your passion for learning and your commitment to growing your expertise is truly inspiring. The whole AEW team is behind you β€” congratulations! πŸ™Œ
