We make the complicated stuff happen.

A lot of the work that comes through our workshop isn’t straightforward. It’s custom, detailed, awkward to access, tight on programme, still evolving during construction, or the kind of project where everyone needs to work together to get the result over the line.

That’s where having the right people involved early makes a difference.

Between the teams, we’re able to take projects from detailing and fabrication right through to installation, while keeping communication simple and making sure things actually move. It means less chasing different suppliers, less confusion on site, and a team that understands the project from the beginning instead of halfway through.

There’s a lot that goes into pulling complex projects together, and while most people only ever see the finished result, there’s a huge amount of planning, coordination, problem solving, workshop hours, and experience sitting behind it.

That’s the part we enjoy.

Can you spot your project? 👀

The workshop is chocca this week with a bit of everything rolling through like:

- Town Hall panels in fabrication
- Custom-made window sill flashings heading out for install
- An RPZ cage build underway

That’s workshop life for the team at S&P. One minute it’s detailed architectural work, the next it’s heavy fabrication, then straight into custom one-offs that only exist because someone said, “Can you make this?”

Every job is different and has it's own challenges but we love seeing them all come in and get done!

A clean finish always comes down to the details!

For this project, the brief was simple: create aluminium swing and sliding gates that matched seamlessly with the existing fence line and suited the character of the home.

The result is a custom setup that looks like it’s always been there - right down to the proportions, spacing, and profile details carried consistently across the full frontage.

Two swing gates, one sliding gate, all fabricated in aluminium for a durable, low-maintenance finish that will stand up to the coastal environment for years to come.

Got a tricky job in mind? We'd love to help!

The BNZ Theatre project in the heart of Hamilton was one of those jobs that doesn’t come along every day.

Designed as a “room within a room”, the auditorium was built to create an incredibly intimate experience for the audience. The orchestra soundshell needed to do more than just look impressive - it had to reflect music and spoken word properly while complementing the theatre’s interior design.

When it came time to bring the soundshell to life, the project team needed someone willing to take on the full challenge: design, engineering, fabrication, rigging integration, testing, commissioning, and training the theatre crew to operate it safely and efficiently.

Through our experience in the entertainment industry, we had the right people around us to make it happen.

Bringing in the A-team:

- Jason McMillian, Ferndale Furniture & crew - Joinery & timber fabrication
- Steve Sanders, Grouse Lighting & crew - Rigging consultancy, installation training & support
- Drew Lees, Royal New Zealand Ballet - Stage design & rigging support
- Shane Dougherty, Mainstream - Transport & logistics
- Garrick Rollinson, Stagemark - Rigging components supply & support
- Tim Wilson, King & Dawson - Structural engineering consultancy

Led by Chris and the S&P crew, the components were fabricated in Wellington before being transported to Hamilton using custom-built trolleys that also double as storage systems when the shell is not in use.

Working alongside local theatre technicians led by Ash Jugum, the team then installed and commissioned what is possibly one of the most complex geometric soundshells imaginable.

Recently, the NZSO held its first performance using the completed soundshell, with photography by Jasmax capturing the final result beautifully.

A massive thank you to Gus Sharp and Michael Gilling for their trust, patience, and support throughout the project. If you’re attending a show at BNZ Theatre, keep an eye out for it!

Take a look at this awesome custom Corten sign that we've just put together for Human Dynamo.

This one certainly pushed a few boundaries!

A curved 10mm Corten sign, with a lot of design work behind the scenes to make sure the final look landed right - especially once lighting was added in on site by the Human Dynamo crew.

It took plenty of hours to get this across the line, with a big push from Hayden, Michael B and Paul to deliver it on time.

Looking forward to seeing it fully finished in place - this one’s going to stand out!

Not every job is straightforward - and that’s where we come in.

Steel E.D has built a reputation in Wellington and beyond for aluminium and stainless work that holds up on site, on detail, and under pressure. Since moving into our Korokoro workshop, we’ve only strengthened what we can deliver.

Alongside us, Patton Engineering brings decades of experience in large-scale engineering and fabrication. Established in 1952, they’ve been doing it properly for a long time - and it shows.

Together, it means more capability, better coordination, and fewer headaches for the people we’re working with.

Simple as that!

It was great to be part of hosting the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce at the workshop alongside the team at Tilley & Patton.

It’s always better seeing this stuff in person and walking through the shop, seeing how things actually get made, and understanding what goes into turning a drawing into something tangible is always exciting!

It gave people a good look at how our capabilities line up and where Tilley & Patton and Steel ED & Patton can support each other.

Thanks for coming along!

This was a pretty awesome project to be a part of.

This is the 2026 Home of the Year - Eastbourne House, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects and built by Planit Construction Ltd.

We had a hand in the staircase and some of the metalwork on this one - the kind of detail that needs to sit quietly in the background but still be done properly, and doesn't it look fantastic?

We're proud to have contributed to a project like this alongside a seriously strong team.

Something a bit different on this one - custom brass handrails for a residential home, designed to tie in with the wider look and feel of the space.

We had to make sure we had clean lines with a warm finish so that the detailing felt like it belongs, not just added in last minute.

It's a nice change from the usual programming, and our client is very happy with the result.
