This one really put our "not a problem" catch phrase to the test.

The brief was for a curved metal set piece for a theatre production, with one extra requirement worked into the job: it had to be able to pack down and travel in oversize luggage on a plane.

That meant working through the curves, sections and connections in the workshop so everything could be transported, reassembled and do its job once it reached the stage.

This is another project in the books within our entertainment and theatre sector that we really enjoy the variety and design challenges that these job pose!

A fair bit of bending, fitting and figuring out later, and the finished metalwork was up above the set doing exactly what it was made for.

Probably one of the more interesting things we’ve helped send through airport baggage lately.

Boston looked after this one from house lights down till encore and certainly took it on to see it was exactly right and ready for the show to go on!

Another roof flashing job through the workshop, with every sheet passing through Ken’s hands and eyes along the way. Just another one through the folding department!

He’s the legend behind the folds and sheet metal, keeping things moving and making sure each piece is ready to go. This is the sort of work you’ll appreciate when the Wellington rain and wind turns up. With 5 guys in the folding department and over 70 years worth of folding experience, there isn't much we haven't done!

So bring in your sketches on a bit of Gib, or our snazzy sketch pads and we can get them made for you in no time at all!

A few hours up the road, there’s a fair bit taking shape in Whanganui.

Te Puna Hapori is home to the new Whanganui Courthouse, part of a wider community wellbeing hub being developed for the city.

Our work so far has included the plant room louvres and RPZ cage, and we’re now getting into fabrication on the staircase balustrades, which bring a few challenges of their own. There are a handful of smaller scopes in the mix too, and together they’re a good example of the overall solution we can provide on a project like this.

Rather than bringing in different contractors for each piece of metalwork, it can all sit with one specialist team from fabrication through to installation.

Plenty happening on this one, with more to share as it progresses.

On a fantastic Wellington day, we loaded the second-to-last truck with our cell metalwork for Hawke's Bay Prison, ready for Sam Greaney and the Patton Engineering team to install. This whole team from Steel E.D. & Patton (S&P) and Tilley & Patton has moved mountains to make this happen for Naylor Love and the Department of Corrections.

All manufactured at the same time:

- 312 bunk beds
- 156 staircases
- 312 privacy screens
- 4 accessible cell beds and screens
- 88 riser covers, containing 336 door leaves

Tonnes of EG, mild and stainless steel, aluminium and extrusions. Thousands of square metres of powder coating, miles of welding wire, and countless cutting discs - by every measure, this was a herculean task. Delivered in record time and defect-free, because that's the standard we strive for. Super proud of what this team has achieved.

Massive shout out to the suppliers who helped us deliver this milestone: Steel & Tube Holdings Limited, Vulcan, Powder Coating Services, Booth's Logistics, Patton Custodial, Patton Engineering, Patton Blast & Paint, Nicolsons, Patton AsBuilt, Centreline, Graley Plastics and Laser Cutting, CNZ Insulation, FECO Plating, ES3, and the many other suppliers who played their part.

And this isn't even everyone at Randwick Road - we're missing 8 of the crew who helped make this happen. Now we're poised and ready to take on your project. We've got capacity to burn, even as bookings start to fill up between now and the end of the year and into next year - there's always room for you, as you can see by the sheer number of awesome people at Randwick Road.

Not every job looks like it should be in a art gallery, or in a design magazine.

This time it was squeezing into the inside of the Wellington Cenotaph - respirators on, torches out, installing new access ladders in spaces barely wide enough to turn around in.

No curved facades or feature staircases here. Just dust, tight quarters, and getting the job done because a landmark that means this much needs access made to last, even in the bits no one will ever see! Great mahi by Ron and Ruben to get it done. Great selfies too!

We had the Hawkins Project Management and Quantity Surveyor Cadets through the workshop recently!

Nothing beats seeing the scale of what we do in person - walking through the process from raw material to finished product, and getting a chance to talk through what's coming up, and getting a greater understanding of just what we can do with metal.

We're always keen to open the doors and show people how we work. If you're after a look through, get in touch... it's not a problem. Even some of the more experienced Hawkins guys learnt a few new tricks!

Steel E.D. & Patton is part of something bigger.

Over the past seven years, Patton Engineering has grown into the wider Patton Group, bringing together five specialist teams and more than 170 people across the country.

For our clients, that means we can call on a much wider range of expertise when a project needs it. From structural and architectural metalwork through to seismic detailing, street furniture, surface protection and finishing, there’s a lot of capability sitting within the group.

We still do what we do best here at Steel E.D. & Patton, but having the wider team behind us means we can collaborate, solve problems and take on work that crosses more than one discipline.

“Can you make this work?” is probably the question we hear more than any other.

And more often than not, the answer is "not a problem".

It’s what we do at Steel E.D. & Patton. We take an idea, a drawing, or sometimes just a problem that needs solving, and work through how to actually make it happen. From 3D CAD detailing, samples, mock-ups and prototypes through to fabrication and delivery, we can manage the job from concept to completion.

Flashings, facades, handrails, balustrades or something completely custom. Aluminium, stainless steel, carbon steel, copper or brass. If it needs a bit of thinking to make it work, even better.

You’ve probably walked past our work a hundred times and never known it.

A throwback to Wellington Children’s Hospital, where a big part of our work was the metalwork designed to quietly do its job, day in and day out. Bumper rails and kick plates protect walls and corners from constant knocks, stainless steel lift fronts are made to handle heavy daily use, and powder-coated aluminium seismic door panels are engineered to move safely when they need to, while looking like any other door the rest of the time.

Working alongside McKee Fehl on the 7,200m², three-storey hospital, there was plenty of metalwork that most people using the building will never give a second thought.

And that’s kind of the point.

Every piece engineered... Nothing accidental.

Not every job that comes through the workshop is about the finished look. Sometimes it’s about making someone’s day-to-day job a whole lot easier.

We recently designed and made these custom trolleys for the St James Theatre in Wellington, made specifically to move their temporary seating around the venue.

Previously, moving the seating meant relying on pallet jacks or a fair bit of manual handling. These were designed with the operators in mind, making the process easier, safer and much more practical.

A relatively simple solution to a very real problem, and exactly the sort of custom job we enjoy getting stuck into.
