Tragedy in Christchurch Red Zone: Man Dies After Attempting to Retrieve Copper from Live Transformer

A man has died in a late-night incident in Christchurch after reportedly attempting to retrieve copper from a live power transformer in the city’s red zone.

Emergency services were called to Brooker Ave in Burwood around midnight following reports of a fire. When crews arrived, they discovered the man critically injured near a power box.

New Zealand Police Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said initial inquiries suggest the man may have been trying to extract copper from the transformer when the incident occurred.

Responders were unable to immediately reach the victim due to the danger posed by the still-live transformer. Power had to be cut to the unit — affecting around 700 nearby homes — before first aid could be attempted.

Despite efforts, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the incident serves as a stark warning about the extreme risks of interfering with electrical infrastructure.

“This is a reminder of the dangers of power infrastructure and why it should never be interfered with,” Todd said.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, and the death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police are urging the public to report any suspicious activity around power installations immediately by calling 111.

The incident has also taken a toll on first responders, with support being provided to those involved in what has been described as a traumatic scene.
