Across FMG offices around New Zealand, Floc wool acoustic panels are helping create comfortable, functional working environments while putting locally grown strong wool to work in a high-value, contemporary application.

This might sound obvious, but it’s also one of wool’s greatest strengths as a material….

Earlier this year, Starship Children’s Hospital completed its largest redevelopment since opening 35 years ago, including a 45% expansion of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

T&R was proud to be involved in an earlier phase of the PICU redevelopment, working with Chow:Hill on an acoustic ceiling solution that would not only perform technically, but contribute to a calmer, more comforting environment for critically unwell children and their whānau.

Phonic Combo+ ceiling tiles were custom printed with photography of New Zealand forest canopy, bringing nature into the space while providing high-performance acoustic treatment.

As Chow:Hill described the design: “Biophilic printed ceiling tiles reflect a tree canopy, removing a hospital feel to evoke the calming, grounding feeling of being in nature.”

With the wider redevelopment now complete, it’s great to revisit a project that shows how considered material choices can contribute to spaces designed around the people who use them.

October is Wool Month, and there are some encouraging signs for New Zealand strong wool. 🐑

When we filmed this last year, the conversation around strong wool was a pretty tough one. Years of low returns had left many farmers struggling to cover the cost of shearing, and finding new, higher-value uses for the fibre was more important than ever.

A year on, there are reasons to feel optimistic. Strong wool prices have risen significantly, reaching their highest levels in 15 years earlier this year, with growing global interest in natural fibres helping put New Zealand wool back in the spotlight.
But the need for innovation hasn’t gone away.

For that momentum to continue, we need to keep finding ways to use this incredible natural material here at home, creating products that recognise its value rather than treating it as a by-product.

That’s a big part of why Floc exists - taking New Zealand strong wool and giving it a high-value role in contemporary interiors.

So for Wool Month, we’ll be celebrating the fibre, the people who grow it, and some of the reasons we think its future is looking pretty exciting.

Fiona Natiso and Alessandra Mayo loved meeting so many of you at this year’s in:situ Conference in Tāmaki Makaurau last month.

With in:situ bringing together the architecture community from across Aotearoa, alongside international guests attending the Commonwealth Association of Architects General Assembly, there was plenty to talk about, learn from and take back to the rest of the T&R team.

Fiona and Alessandra also loved the opportunity to head along to Four Shells Kava Lounge, Auckland’s first dedicated kava lounge, and experience first-hand the way kava brings people together for conversation and connection.

Shared vision, shared values, and something exciting in the works.

On 7 October, Floc’s Business Development Manager Tom O’Sullivan will join internationally acclaimed New Zealand designer David Trubridge for the first event in Ngā Toi Creative Hawke’s Bay’s new Create Collaboration Series.

We think it’s the perfect pairing, David Trubridge Design and Floc have been collaborating behind the scenes for some time now, exploring what can happen when David’s approach to design meets one of New Zealand’s most remarkable natural materials. We’re not quite ready to show you the result, but we’re getting close…

At Foodeast Haumako, David and Tom will talk regenerative design, collaboration, New Zealand materials and the value that can be created when different industries and ideas come together.

And perhaps offer a little insight into what they’ve been working on together.

Product spotlight: Floc Comfort

Improving the acoustics of an existing space doesn’t always mean starting again.

Sound absorption and sound insulation. They’re not the same thing.

It’s an important distinction though, when choosing acoustic products for a commercial interior.

Products such as Floc and T&R’s Phonic Absorb are designed for sound absorption – absorbing sound within a room to help reduce reverberation and create a more comfortable acoustic environment.

Sound insulation has a different job - reducing sound transmission from one space to another. Both play an important role in acoustic design, but they solve different challenges. Understanding the needs of the space is the first step towards specifying the right solution.

A first look at Floc at FMG.

Floc is being used across FMG offices around New Zealand, and we recently got a look inside the Christchurch space.

It feels like a particularly fitting home for Floc. FMG has deep roots in New Zealand’s rural communities, while our acoustic products are made using New Zealand strong wool – taking a fibre grown on farms across Aotearoa into contemporary commercial interiors.

We’ll be sharing much more about this project and the story behind it soon, but for now, here’s a sneak peak into one of the offices in the new Christchurch space.

We’re heading to in:situ 2026!

From 8–10 September, T&R Interior Systems will be exhibiting at Aotearoa’s largest architecture event, bringing together architects and design professionals from across New Zealand, the Pacific and further afield.

This year’s conference explores Manaakitanga, looking at the ways architecture can provide support, generosity and hospitality for those who engage with it. It’s a theme we’re looking forward to seeing explored across three days of ideas, conversations and connection.

Fiona Natiso and Alessandra Mayo will be there representing T&R, so if you’re attending, make sure you come and say hello. They’ll be at Stand B27 throughout the conference.
