Sound absorption and sound insulation. They’re not the same thing.

It’s an important distinction though, when choosing acoustic products for a commercial interior.

Products such as Floc and T&R’s Phonic Absorb are designed for sound absorption – absorbing sound within a room to help reduce reverberation and create a more comfortable acoustic environment.

Sound insulation has a different job - reducing sound transmission from one space to another. Both play an important role in acoustic design, but they solve different challenges. Understanding the needs of the space is the first step towards specifying the right solution.

A first look at Floc at FMG.

Floc is being used across FMG offices around New Zealand, and we recently got a look inside the Christchurch space.

It feels like a particularly fitting home for Floc. FMG has deep roots in New Zealand’s rural communities, while our acoustic products are made using New Zealand strong wool – taking a fibre grown on farms across Aotearoa into contemporary commercial interiors.

We’ll be sharing much more about this project and the story behind it soon, but for now, here’s a sneak peak into one of the offices in the new Christchurch space.

We’re heading to in:situ 2026!

From 8–10 September, T&R Interior Systems will be exhibiting at Aotearoa’s largest architecture event, bringing together architects and design professionals from across New Zealand, the Pacific and further afield.

This year’s conference explores Manaakitanga, looking at the ways architecture can provide support, generosity and hospitality for those who engage with it. It’s a theme we’re looking forward to seeing explored across three days of ideas, conversations and connection.

Fiona Natiso and Alessandra Mayo will be there representing T&R, so if you’re attending, make sure you come and say hello. They’ll be at Stand B27 throughout the conference.

Why wool? For us, it starts with the material.

Wool is naturally grown and renewable, with sheep producing a new fleece every year. It’s resilient, naturally odour resistant and has very low VOC emissions. Wool also has the ability to absorb some harmful chemicals from indoor air, helping contribute to healthier interior environments.

Then there’s what it brings to a space - Natural texture, warmth and, importantly for Floc, excellent acoustic performance.

It’s a pretty remarkable fibre - grown here in New Zealand, and increasingly finding its place in contemporary interiors.

Product spotlight: Eclipse 92mm Aluminium Suite

Designed and extruded in New Zealand, Eclipse 92mm is a flexible aluminium partitioning suite developed for commercial interiors.

Made to work with 92mm stud and 13mm plasterboard, the system features snap-fix componentry and options for both frontline and double glazing.

It can also be paired with T&R’s Vertibrace seismic partition restraint system where required.

A clean, practical system designed to make commercial partition specification straightforward.

A beautiful combination of natural materials at BNZ Palmerston North.

Floc Roll in Truffle has been used throughout meeting rooms and the general office area, finished with timber edging that works beautifully with the warmth and texture of the wool.

And while it looks good, it’s working hard too - helping reduce reverberation and create a more comfortable acoustic environment across the busy workplace.

The project also features T&R Phonic ceiling tiles in Black, adding another layer of acoustic performance overhead.

A great example of acoustic materials becoming part of the design, and of a business walking the talk when it comes to use of wool and sustainable materials.

Thanks for trusting Floc, BNZ!

When a room feels calm, conversations are easy to follow and there's no distracting echo, most people won't notice why…

And that's exactly what we want.

Good acoustic design isn't there to be seen. It's there to support the experience of the space, allowing architecture, furniture and people to take centre stage.

Floc (literally) works quietly in the background, improving how a space feels without competing for attention.

Designed to support the wellbeing of tamariki and whānau, this beautiful Mana Mokopuna project demonstrates how acoustics contribute to creating spaces where people feel comfortable to meet, connect and communicate.

Working alongside Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, Maycroft Construction and Metro Interiors Wellington, Floc Sound panels in Sage were direct-fixed to the concrete structure, providing high-performance acoustic treatment while complementing the calming interior palette.

A thoughtful project where performance and design work hand in hand.

Did you know that around half the weight of clean wool is biogenic carbon?
Biogenic carbon is carbon that's naturally captured from the atmosphere by plants, transferred to sheep as they graze, and stored in their wool as it grows.
Interesting, right?

Understanding this natural carbon cycle helps provide a more accurate picture of wool's environmental impact and is one of the reasons researchers continue to study natural fibres differently from many other building materials.

It's another example of why material transparency matters, and why natural wool continues to play an important role in conversations about sustainable design.

Thank you for the inspiration, International Wool Textile Organisation

When architects specify Floc, they're rarely choosing it for just one reason.

It's the combination of qualities that makes it stand out - excellent acoustic performance, natural texture, a curated colour palette, low maintenance, and the confidence that comes from using a renewable New Zealand material.

Every project has different priorities, but increasingly we're seeing designers looking for products that perform technically while adding warmth and authenticity to a space.

Natural wool continues to tick both boxes.
