Not all ANZACs carried rifles.
Some carried tools, wire, and the responsibility of keeping everything connected under pressure.
Sappers - also known as military engineers - were the problem-solvers of the ANZAC forces. Their role was as complex as it was critical. They built bridges under fire, dug trenches and tunnels, cleared obstacles, managed demolitions, and restored vital infrastructure in environments where conditions were constantly changing and often dangerous.
They worked at the front line and behind it, enabling movement, maintaining supply lines, and ensuring communication could continue when it mattered most. Without them, operations stalled. With them, the impossible became achievable.
New Zealander Sapper Samuel Forsyth, VC, served with the New Zealand Engineers at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front. In 1918, his actions under intense fire, showing courage, technical skill, and determination, earned him the Victoria Cross.
His story reflects the broader contribution of sappers: highly skilled, adaptable, and relied upon in the most critical moments. Their work was often unseen. But it was never insignificant. They didn’t just support the mission; they made it possible.
At EIS, we recognise that same spirit in engineering today: practical thinking, precision, and the ability to solve complex challenges in high-pressure environments.
This ANZAC Day, we honour all who served, especially the engineers who built, connected, and made it possible.
Lest we forget.

Take 5. It could prevent an incident.
Before starting any job, we encourage one simple habit: Stop. Look. Think.
A “Take 5” is about pausing to assess immediate hazards and risks in your work area - before tools are picked up, before systems are switched on.
Because most incidents don’t arise from a lack of knowledge, they occur when we skip that final moment of awareness.
At EIS, we’ve been reinforcing this across our teams throughout March, to spend five minutes to reset, identify risks, and work more safely.
It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
