Good News
After being closed for many months the Waihōpai River section of Kelly’s Lap is open again.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this multimillion dollar project to strengthen the flood bank for climate change resilience.

John Kelly was Waihōpai Invercargill’s first European settler. His son was also called John.
John Kelly Junior, was an epic runner and first settler born in Waihōpai Invercargill.
Kelly’s Lap is named as a tribute to him.
It’s a 16 km loop route that includes the city’s earliest paths along our two major waterways The Otepuni Stream and The Waihōpai River

It’s ok for now, Kelly’s lap hikers usually use the south bank of the Gladstone stretch anyhow but pretty soon there’ll be massive earth work in the borstal bridge area

The walking track along the north side of the Waihōpai River, between North Road and the Preston Street Pump Station, will be closed for up to four weeks from 16 January while all the large blue gum and pine trees in the area are removed.🌲
These trees are affecting the stop bank, and in a flood, could cause the stop bank to fail.
🦺Please take care in this area as heavy machinery will be operating. Fences will be in place to secure the area, please respect these and use the south side track instead.
