Designing roundabouts in built-up urban environments has to be one of the more challenging types of roading design.
The team at CivilTEC NZ Limited have either designed or managed the design of more than 30 roundabouts, and each one has had its own constraints and quirks. No two sites are ever the same.
A lot of people probably just see a circular intersection, but behind the scenes thereโs a constant balancing act going on.
One of the biggest challenges is achieving enough vehicle entry deflection to slow vehicles safely as they enter the circulating carriageway - while still allowing oversized vehicles like buses and delivery trucks to get through without mounting kerbs or islands.
At the same time, youโre also balancing:
- splitter islands big enough to safely protect pedestrians, mobility scooters or pushchairs crossing the road,
- carriageway and footpath crossfalls that arenโt too steep, for comfort and accessibility,
- drainage grades to capture stormwater effectively,
- vehicle crossover angles into properties,
- signage placement without cluttering footpaths or creating hazards,
- adequate sight lines, so drivers approaching the roundabout can safely see circulating traffic, and have time to stop.
The interesting part is that all of these elements affect each other:
- move one kerb line or adjust one level and it can create several new issues elsewhere.
- widen the lane to allow a large truck to track through and you lose the deflection to slow the speeds down.
Thatโs probably what we enjoy most about this type of work - trying to find the balance between safety, function, constructability and practicality within a very constrained space.
Below are some photos of a recently constructed roundabout that the team here at CivilTEC NZ Limited worked closely on with Kฤpiti Coast District Council, from concept through to detailed design and construction support. Once landscaping planting is complete, this should soften the perimeter hardscaping.
